I have an opportunity to by a Sport King in pretty good condition for $1000. It has a metal ball return setup. I will need to replace the cloth. Likely needs some pockets replaced. Also when I measured the playing surface, bumper to bumper was 8.5 ft. Is that typical? For as long as I have been playing this game it has suddenly dawned on me I have no clue about tables. Is a Gold Crown I, vastly superior to a Sport King?

Actually I know of another place with some GC 1's. They are pretty beat up and missing side parts underneath the table. A couple have the ash trays on the corners and appear to be GC II's. Plus they have been painted this butt ugly white enamel, with a brush no doubt. I can get one for $500 maybe less.

Second, how do you measure cushion response? Obviously they are the original cushions. Should they last pretty long? They are over 50years old now. Should I jump on this? Or continue to look? The guy is pretty firm. Wondering if I should just wait for a GC to pop up.

Help!

I'm not a table mech so you'll need to wait for one of them to respond. The 8 1/2' is a Pro8. It's in between the 8' and 9'. The white enamel on the GC SHOULD actually be Formica I think. But given it's age....who knows.

9ft tables measure 50in x 100in between the cushions.
In other words a 9ft table is 8ft4in x 4ft2in playing surface.
Sounds like you might have measured a little off.

You should get an est from a mechanic in your area.
The labor to recondition a worn out Gold Crown might make a Sport King in good condition a better buy.

There is no white Formica on a gold crown. The top rails are a wood grain formica with the sides, legs and stretcher being painted wood on early models and stained rosewood finish on later ones. The painted ones were available in several colors.

See^^^^^ that's why to wait for a table mech to finish work and check in. lol

Don't look now but I think I found GC 3 or IV, with drop pockets. How can I tell the difference between 3 & 4. I know the box is massive rectangular, with no cross bars. The slate looks to be an inch thick with wood backing. It has wood sides and brass colored pocket metal. It also has DROP POCKETS. What is the value of ball returns?

They are going to throw in new Gorena cloth for $1500. The table is disassembled sitting at a pool hall. Should I give them $750 down and the remainder on a complete setup with not "issues" with the table? It looks to be in very good condition.

Ya know I have no clue on how to play pool for 1. And 2, after playing for 30 years i just learned that a 9ft table is really 100 inches. (Whats wrong with this picture?)

Gc

the GC 4 has two bolts attaching corner casting per side of pocket casting to rail with a floating nut and there will be slate leveling adjustment bolts visible from the bottom side under the table on the frame... The GC has a name plate and serial number on the stringer as well..
