I tried this shot for a while, and once I got it down I was surprised at how often it worked out ok. I have seen the shot before, but never tried it for some reason. It looks harder than it is, but it is still too agressive for my taste. I think the place I play has cloth that is too slow for this shot also, because in order to get enough speed I had to hit it so hard that the balls started bouncing pretty bad.
 
You have nothing on this shot. Play it safe and you'll get a better next shot. A 5 rail could get you in big trouble, like giving up a bank. Remember you only get to shoot it once.

I think the best way is a soft shot with a touch of right to avoid the side pocket. It will leave the OB on or near the end rail. Not to hard though because you could scratch in the corner your shooting from. Some else posted this, but I'm saying play it a little softer. Like this and they don't have to like this shot.

I played with the 5-railer for a while yesterday, and I think it's actually pretty reasonable. It's better than 50-50 to give a decent outcome, and there will be an enduring psychological effect if you pull it off.

I also learned that the 5-railer is pretty makeable from a large portion of the long rail. However, if the object ball is much higher on the rail than shown in the original post, the 1-rail bank, struck medium to medium-soft with low right, seems like a better option.
