20 year old review of The Hustler. Nice read by one of the best.

COM to me is like finger nails on a chalkboard. I can't watch more then a few scenes without cringing. The diolog is moronic, it has plot holes you can drive a truck through. Even the acting is terrible. Tom Cruse is at his worst and Newman is embarrassing.
But talk to the average person and they liked it.
I totally agree. If they had just followed the books storyline, it would be a classic today 👌

I recently watched The Hustler with a new appreciation for the game now that I’ve kind of immersed myself into getting better. Truly great flick, directing, and acting.

I must have been asleep, though, because I missed that Burt ordered Eddie’s thumbs to be broken.

He said before it happened "walk into the wrong place and you'll get hurt" or something to that effect, then knew it happened afterwards as to who did it. Very likely he put the word out to watch out for a guy hustling.

I think that was in the last scene of the movie long after Eddie got beat up.
He says something like" Don't walk into any big time pool rooms again"

One of the best things about the Hustler is the pool footage. You can see the table and the balls, not just a close-up of a stick hitting the cue ball and then multiple balls falling in random pockets. Most of the time the actors are doing the shooting, Jackie Gleason was a very accomplished pool player and I guess Newman was able to learn.
