I've never made it to the Open. I always find a way to make it to Louisville,KY for the Derby. How do they compare?
I've been going to the US Open on and off for the last 7 years and I just missed my first Derby City Classic this year.
The US Open is a more 'formal' affair with international and prestigious flares.
The US Open is played in a convention center with seating for about 250+ spectators. Smoke free environment for all. Race to 11 double elimination with the finals being a race to 13. If they fill the field of 256, 1st place will be $40,000. The Holiday Inn hotel is within a short walk, maybe 50 yards. I think there are 16 total tables, all Diamonds with 4 1/2 pockets.
The Derby City Classic is played in a ball room of the Executive Inn. You can stay in the same hotel as the tournament. Lots of Mini tournaments and nightly action. There are 20+ tournament tables, all Diamond with 4 1/4 inch pockets. Open for play after midnite or when the final games for the evening are over. They also open the main tournament room to smokers after tournament play. Upstairs and in some places in the forieurs, there are lots of 7 foot diamond smart tables that use the red circle cue balls.
The games for the DCC is 9 ball banks, One Pocket and 9 ball. All are single elimination with a single buy back option when you lose. Redraw for each round because of the buy back option. With Odd number of players, someone will get a bye. This can be very interesting in the final rounds when there are less than 10 players.
Action at QMaster (host room for the US Open) is always a crowd pleaser. All the pros seem to migrate there during the week to test themselves against players they may not see but once a year. And the Food is good. QMasters is a great pool hall, Lots of great tables and very good service.
I would hate to have to chose which one I miss. I've been lucky in the past, living in Cincinnati and being able to drive to Louisville and Norfolk VA. Now that I live in Calif. Flying is the only option.
I still plan on attending both.
