about the BBC and its failure to put the World Championship on the internet for web users outside the UK
Thanks to other posters, we have the step by step solution for this problem:
Use a proxy server.
Really simple to setup, once you find the right place in the menu. Each browser and each version seems to have it's own unique hiding place.
The links in the thread discuss Explorer and Foxfire
I use Netscape. In the most recent version, 8.1 proxies are in Tools>Options>General>Connection Settings
In Netscape 7.2
Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Proxies
I got around to trying this out yesterday - english commentary, no ads
I had a short period around 3 p.m. when the screen would freeze and I would have to reestablish the connection. Otherwise it was flawless.
The default viewer for BBC is Real. On the screen when a small Real viewer comes up, you will find in the upper right of the screen Preferences which can be used to change the viewer to Windows Media, and connection speed.
When I made the change to Windows media, the screen would return to the small Real viewer. Underneath the screen click Launch stand alone media player and it makes the switch.
If a techno-idiot like me can muddle through it, you can.
Typing Proxy Servers into Google will bring up sites with proxy servers for various countries, so you can look up alternatives to the proxy server given in the threads.
And if you have problems, post on the main forum. When I asked for information about proxy servers I got a response immediately
Just remember to go back in to Proxies and switch back to your normal setting (little green dot inside a circle) after viewing the BBC. The proxy server setting set up remains so you don't have to enter the information again, just go in and tell the computer to use it when you want to view the BBC again.
