This will be my first time going to the Classic.

I am not really interested in playing in the events, unless their is some kind of incentive getting a players pass will be cheaper.

Anyone who can shed some light on their experience(s) that would like to share the do's and don'ts would be greatly appreciated.

Places to stay near by. 20 miles or less.
Parking at the event.
Anything else that might help a first timer.

I’ve been a few times as spectator only when I was driving down from Chicago. Haven’t been in a few years since relocation to FL. Sounds like you will have your own car and being from Oregon you are used to crap weather. So 1st, don’t let everyone convince you have to stay at the on-site hotel. If you are going to be playing all night long and or rooming with three others like it is college and lug a cooler in and want to split the cost of a room for 10 days at the group rate then sure. There are a few basic hotels right up the road in New Albany. I stayed at the Hampton Inn which was perfectly fine. Safe parking, good WiFi, cell reception, and decent continental breakfast for a bit cheaper than the casino hotel (if you aren’t sharing a room). Got a growing food scene in New Albany and Louisville. Had a great meal at Proof on Main in Louisville. There are plenty of other places. Try some chopped & sauced mutton. Get out and see some of the area. The casino is in the middle of nowhere, but it is an easy drive down the county rd from New Albany, around 8 miles if I remember right. Big deal. Unless something has changed Parking in the garage at the casino was simple and plentiful. The Rustic Frog is conveniently located between the casino and New Albany too.

Player pass is cheaper. Play in the Banks and you can spectate for 9 days.

That's always been the incentive to play, for the players who have little chance. It gives you every reason to lock horns with a champion for a cheaper price than admission.

And there's a specific forum for this.

"You are used to crap weather" DAMN!!! LMFAO!!!

I cannot find any forms. Do you know where i need to look?

My recollection is that you want to sign up early or you will be charged something like a $25 "late fee" if you pay at the venue.

Also, contrary to the opinion of others, the convenience of staying at the casino cannot be overstated. Yes, it is expensive, and if past history is any evidence, the rates will keep going up and it'll probably be close to $200 a night by the time you add in tax, license, and a full tank of gas for what would otherwise be a $60 a night room -- total rip off. If you're inclined to stay the nine day duration you'll get a break -- but if you're swooping in for one event you'll pay through the nose (both nostrils).

If you decide to stay at the casino, book early because they will fill up soon. Last year there was lots of kvetching and gnashing of teeth after early November due to the unavailability of rooms. They have us by the short ones and know it.

As to signing up, keep checking the DCC website. I think they usually open up entries around October/November.

Agree. I went for the first time in 2017 and didn't think off-site would be a big deal. But because the nature of DCC is to get too little sleep, I regretted my choice a lot. An easy place onsite to nap and shower is well worth it if it's in your budget.

You only get hit with a $25 extra charge if you sign up the day of the event. If you do not plan on getting to the venue a day early, sign up online.

If you're going for the week, it would be better and cheaper to enter one of the tournaments and take a shot. I did that for 6 years and was surprised, I either won my entry back or made a profit 4 out of 6 times in the one pocket. And got to play some really good players and had fun. Couldn't lose since I was just buying a ticket anyway.

The casino has a parking deck and it's free.

Food is pricey.

I have a niece in town that I stay with so I cant add anything about the hotel situation.

I have been losing weight to prepare for DCC, and I think I may keep it up by buying a huge icebox, egg cooker, and hot plate specifically for the trip to Derby. The food IS super expensive, and generally, horrible for you. I am thinking about sticking to a high protein diet, bringing in rotisserie chickens every few days, lettuce/etc.

Even with buying all of this stuff, with the prices that the casino charges, I will come out ahead.

Jezus.

Binon's Steak House is the nuts. Steaks, lobster, salmon, shrimp cocktail, and sourdough bread to boot. All the wine, beer, and sprits you could ever want.

The way I've been going for a large portion of my life, "living some" is likely to lead to an early death.
