One of the things I see about the piloted tap is that it leaves unthreaded space at the bottom of the hole.
The hole must be drilled deeper than it needs to be to allow the pin to fully thread into it.
If the 3/8 x 10 pin were made like the Radial it would have an unthreaded nose that fills most of that unthreaded space.
I dont know if that open space makes any difference but I try to keep it as small as possable.

Just Drill the hole 5/16 deeper nice tap thanks chad .

I ordered one the middle of last week. It Didn't get here today Like I thought It might, but maybe tomorrow It will show up. I had another order with them last weekend though and It showed Up quickly, so I'm sure It will show anytime.

What about machining the bottom of the pin to the diameter of the pilot to take up the slack down there? Good or bad?

Greg

I just got The tap today. Looks good, really sharp, and the pilot is indeed fluted. First thing I noticed was the shank diameter was quite a bit smaller then most of My other taps. I have'nt tried It out yet, But It looks like it should work well, just have to play with some scrap to figure out the best bore size to use with It.:)

Edit, cause I could'nt wait to try this tap, and I'm excited about the results, so thought I'd share. I just tried It out on a shaft, and I'm amazed By how well It works. I measured the pilot, and was getting .311 on My calibers, so I went to looking for drill bits around the size of the pilot, and could not find one close enough to My liking, but I just happened to have a brand new 6 flute reamer the same size as the pilot, so I center drilled, then step drilled with 2 different drill bits, and followed up with the reamer then tapped. Dead nuts perfect, the cats meow!! I usually use wax and work the tap back and forth, sometimes use the ca method, but needed neither with this tap. I tried the 3&1 that Mike mentioned in another thread, and went all the way through in one shot, making some really nice looking threads.
One other thing, I was wondering about the flat bottoms on the G-10 pins, well it seems that due to the pilot that is what this tap creates making for alot of contact on the pin threads. I though at first that this may not be good for standard pins since there would be less contact, but i screwed the shaft onto a cue with the v bottom threads, and you would'nt know there was less contact from the feel. You can screw the shaft only half way on the pin, not making contact with the joint faces, shake the cue, and there is no slop between the handle and shaft. It is not too tight to screw on either, the perfect amount of snug IMO. seems to work nicely with both pins to me. I wouldn't hesitate to recomend one. I did all this on My hightower, and It's seen a fair amount of use, but It was no problem for this tap & the correct reamer.

Well, that certainly is not a piloted tap. If that is what is supposed to be piloted then I'm glad I haven't sent in any of my loot.

Greg,
So what you're saying is that in your search through your collection of drill bits, you couldn't find a 5/16 bit ? 5/16 is .3125 and is the accepted pilot drill for this tap. I wouldn't let .0015" be an obstacle.

Adonisy,
That is certainly not a piloted tap, what's more, it has a GH-0 tolerance. What that means is that you are going to be tapping a very tight hole. You might think 'Oh Boy', a snugger fit, but in reality you are going to find very few pins that will fit that threaded hole without a struggle. If, for instance you were tapping a Predator shaft and tried to screw it on a McD. handle, there's a very real possibility that you would split the seams of the Predator shaft. I'd send it back or keep it for the rare occasion that you could use it and buy another tap with a H-2 or H-3 tolerance.

I'm not saying I would'nt have tried It had It been My only option, but I wanted a snug fit, and the pilot to be able and work It's magic. What I ended up with By using the reamer was a really straight hole that was tapped straight. I've had a chance to play around with this tap, and can screw a pin in a butt, and it runs dead on true with out any need for bumping the pin In.
Put simply It worked very well for me. The shafts also screw on snug, not too much and not to little. Just where I wanted them. I just noticed they have one with a .308 pilot the other day. The one I got was the .312 version, but was able to use it for both sections. Here's a picture of mine, notice the fluted pilot. I don't think Chad would have sent the wrong tap to someone on purpose, must have been a mistake somewhere.

Sorry!

Well, what can I say?

I guess we all make mistakes... Sorry about that Sen! You've got a new set on the way!

As far as the un-threaded portion left at the end of your tapped hole, why not chase it with your regular 3/8-10 tap if you're worried about it?

BTW, the .308 diameter pilot is specifically made for our 3/8-10 G10 pin. The flat of that pin is at .308, so the pin will snug up perfectly. We will be carrying stainless steel, aluminum, and brass versions of this pin very shortly.

Happy Cueing!
