3 Ball

Do any of you guys play 3 ball, either as a money game or as a way to practice on your own?

If so, I'd like to hear:

1. How you rack/break
2. If you ever play it as a rotation game
3. If you ever play it call shot
4. If you ever use it as a practice game for 8 ball using two solids (or two stripes) and the 8 ball, sinking the 8 last.

and any other details/variations

I was messing around with it last night by myself on my home table, and enjoying it. I'm not sure if it goes under the realm of practicing, or playing, though.

Thanks in advance for the info,

David

I teach newcomers to play 3 ball ghost, but to include another ball when 3 balls are to easy. After "a while" they are playing 9-ball ghost.

Race to 5, ball in hand, run out and score, miss and the Ghost scores.

i love three ball myself - it is fun and a quick money game - we never called shots and the break was a simple diamond shape with the three balls.

I play it quite a bit, mainly because it is a quick way to tell how badly I'm doing. Also very quick and easy to set up for lazy people like me.

1. triangle rack, all balls frozen. Break from head spot or cb froze to center rail, idea is to bank the corner balls 3 rails to the side pockets.
2. Once most racks are 4's or better I usually shoot rotation. Also shoot rotation when everybody else is drunk in those 1$ 3 ball games.
3. Never call shot. This is supposed to be a luck game isn't it? :D
4. No, straight rotation encourages better positional play.

I often use three ball for banks practice. Also when my aim seems off more than usual I like to shoot combinations for the first 2 then bank the last. Doesn't take long to tell what I need to spend some serious practice time on.

i play it by myself sometimes when i'm not playing good-just the ghost I awalys win,

in a ring game gambling its straight up gambling, last ring game i played in there were 5 of us me aanother guy are head and sholders the best 2 of the 5 players in the ring game, we we were the only 2 losers in that game, I was the only person not to win a pot, I fired 22 barrels. I didnt dog it once-I just never had a shot at the $$$. Its a fun game

We used to play 3 ball alot on a procut diamond 9' with 5-7 players, the pot gets really big quick in this game... I love it

as for the break, I break from 1 diamond left of center and 2 diamonds up from the rail... full ball hit, medium speed with a half tip of inside english....
it seems to send 1 corner ball around 3 rails and in the opposite corner alot, also the cueball hits off the opposite side rail and comes back to the middle of the table, usually leaving my choice of shots....
