30 inch shaft question

This may be a stupid question but here goes. When I shoot I notice my hand is all the way back on the butt. Sometimes it's almost on the bumper. Very rarely is it all the way on the wrap. Would buying a 30 inch shaft help or is it a waste. Also how will it effect the playability of the cue because it would not be a 50/50 split with the longer shaft and not a longer butt. Thanks. I not long ago picked up an OB Pro that is 30" & I like it better than the 29" one that I still have.

It put a bit more forward balance to my cue that is already forward balanced & I like it better.

It's not a lot of difference but I can certainly feel it & like it.

My experience in playing with a longer cue kinda felt like putting the balance point backwards. I think this is because i maintained my normal bridge length so in effect the extra length went to the butt.

Maybe it just feels more forward balanced if you maintain your grip on the part of the handle you usually hold on a standard length cue but not if you try to maintain your standard bridge length

Last month i was having a discussion with a well known cuemaker about building me a longer cue. I said i like a 19" balance point on a standard cue. What balance point should would feel the same on a 59 inch cue ? and he said maybe 19.5 or 19.75" from the butt

Playability will be the same. You may need to make some adjustment on aiming if you would adjust your bridge length.

It might be more prudent to invest in a removable butt extension than a longer shaft or cue. On the shots where you need extra reach, 1 inch will not make as much difference as compared to 6 or 7 inches on an extension

Plus, if you keep it standard length, it will be easier to sell if you wish to upgrade in the future

This is exactly what I'm doing. Started with a 58" cue, had a 30" shaft made for it which put me up to 59", and now I'm going to move to a 60". But really, just the extra inch makes a huge difference and I love the longer shaft. The only issue is I've heard some people think a 30" shaft is too whippy, and I've talked to a couple of makers who actually won't make one due to this change in hit.

I also went from a 29" OB to a 30" OB shaft. I didn't adjust the weight of the butt, I just swapped shafts. I haven't noticed any difference in balance or hit. When I pick up my wife's similar cue by mistake with a 29" shaft the only way I know is by my grip being on the butt cap. With the 30" shaft, I only notice the desired effect of my grip being 1" farther forward.

I have longish arms with a 36" sleeve so the longer cue really does help. Now I'm wanting to add at least another inch to the butt so I can bridge closer to the natural pivot length of my shaft.

With variances in arm length / player height coupled with big differences in natural pivot length of shafts I'm surprised we're only talking about 58" to 60" cues and not 56" to 64" cues.

Well I can definitely feel the more forward balance even though it is not much. Maybe it's because my cue has a stainless joint & is forward balanced to start with.

Earl started by adding 6 inches to get to 64.

I've experimented with that & IMO it has advantages & some disadvantages, but I did not stay with it long enough to decide on the net effect.
