314-2 vs I2

I’ve got a Schon with a 314/2 and a Z2 as well as a couple of Mcdermott’s both with matched I2 and I3 shafts.
IMHO there’s not a whole lot of difference. The I2 plays very close to the 314/2 and the I3 plays very similar to the Z2. Personally I don’t really notice any huge amount of difference in deflection between the Predators and the I shafts when compared in their respective classes but I don’t really break out my slide rule when I play. The only real noticeable difference between each brand (at least for me) is that the Predators seem to transmit a bit more feel where the I shafts feel slightly deader but that could just be the tips because I have Kamui on the I shafts and Everest on the predators.
The big difference IMHO is the diameter of the shafts. The I-2’s and the 314/2 have a more traditional feel and are more forgiving when it comes to stroke errors and the action on the cue ball is very predictable. The Z2 and the I3 on the other hand are less forgiving of stroking errors and take some getting used to but you can get more spin on the cue ball with less energy. It’s one of those things that falls into the either you love it or hate it category. Personally I prefer to play with the Z2 and I3 shafts and rotate back and forth without feeling like I have to adapt to anything but when I loan a cue to someone else I generally take mercy on them and give them the 314/2 or the I2 shaft.

It’s hard to say, the I-2 is a top of the line shaft like the predators and OB’s so you can’t really go wrong there. Personally I don’t put a lot of stock in the low deflection hype and buy them primarily for the tip diameter, taper and feel. There are plenty of other people out there that swear by a standard maple shafts so I suppose it’s more a matter of what sort of feel you are looking for. If it feels good and inspires confidence yes you will probably play better but it’s the Indian not the arrow that is sinking the balls.
Will your friend let you borrow his I-2 so you can take some test hits with it? If so. you should know pretty quickly if it’s for you just by swapping shafts back and forth between the I-2 and your standard shaft.
