6-ball shot thoughts from Peoria

Sarah,

I've been trying that nasty 6-ball shot you had in your last game. Like you said, when you're stuck with using follow, any bank shot would leave the cueball near the rail so I tried them but quickly eliminated them.

So I then tried some rail-first, as I think the 6 was just off the rail, right? Scratch city, jawed the 6, not good. Too risky and low percentage.

So then I hit the 6 very, very softly and full, so it just made it to the rail and then the cueball snuggles up right next to it. Not perfect, and you'd get safetied back, but you would have eliminated the outright win anyway.

What ya think?

Jeff,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. That shot has still been haunting me. It has come up in game situations a few times since then as well, go figure, on the 6 ball. I have tried the same thing every time and I have made it most of the times. That makes me feel that I made the right decision in that situation. Like I said to you, I felt that I jumped up a little bit on that shot. I had to stick with my first instinct though and that was to make the ball. If I would have tried anything else it would have only had half the enthusiasm.

On a side note, two good players showed me another option on that shot. A three rail two way shot. Thin the left side of the 6 ball and come around the table into the two balls that were tied up in the pocket. You can be brave and try to make the ball hanging or play safe and leave the 6 in the middle of the table and the cueball on the end rail.
