72 consecutive pots possible? at least in theory

What is the maximum number of balls possible to pot in consecutive strokes in a match? I say there is a possibility of 72 in the following scenario:
Alternate break off format.
Player “a” breaks off.
Player “b” shoots and does not pot a ball.
Player “a” then makes a total clearance potting 36 balls in 36 consecutive strokes.
Player “b” breaks off for the next frame.
Player “a” once more makes a total clearance of 36 balls for a total of 72 consecutive strokes potting a ball on each stroke. Player “a” must then make the break off, thus ending the run.
I expect this must have been done at some time, possibly in a ranking event.
To do that under tournament pressure is starting to sound like a superhuman feat at any rate. But on the other hand, Niagra Falls has been successfully crossed on a tightrope, and more than one time. Sounds like about the same degree of difficulty, just not the same penalty for a miss.

Theoretically you could throw in the foul on the break free ball scenario where the incoming player could make 16 reds & colours.

It is possible to pot a red on the break-off. Players have done this, but maybe not in big matches.

Dennis Taylor, in the 80s, made 72 balls consecutively in an exhibition.
...opponent broke, Dennis ran the table, Dennis broke open, made a ball, and
ran the table.
Once someone else hits a ball, the 'consecutive' series is over.

However, the maximum would be 74, as Slasher pointed out, but Dennis did
not have a free ball to start.

thanx, Slash
