Solids or stripes? What is the plan?

Start with the 9, hit it with a medium speed draw stroke. Intentions are to hit the top side of the 3 to free everything up just don't hit the bottom of the 3 and you should be fine. Most likely next shot is the 11 in the side, easy out from there.

I'll take a stab at this one:

I don't see a good way to break open the 3/12 if you take solids, so stripes it is for me.

I go for the break out right away, shot the 9 and slide over for the breakout. If you hit it high, you have the ball by the side. If you hit it low, you have the 10. You just want to nudge the breakout, don't slam it. Then you are off to the races.

I like stripes too. With solids there are two problems to solve: 3 ball and 8 ball.

Purple stripe blocks red solid. Blue, yellow and red stripes are open and close to pockets. Brown stripe shouldn't be too much of a problem either. Also, it's 5 stripes vs 7 solids, so you're almost halfway done before you even started.

Definitely stripes for me.

I like stripes shooting the 9 first to go for the breakout.

one option not mentioned is to play the five in the side first, then play the 7 in the corner and go one rail for the breakout. This is a distant second or third choice for me because you get the breakout and not necessarily get a good shot following it or you could miss the breakout and your options will be quickly dwindling to get out.
