If you were to ask for/get weight playing 8ball..what would you ask for? is there anything better than points on the wire

thanks

To even things out when playing for fun at my house, I'll let other players have 1 free shot (ball-in-hand) per game. Or 2, 3, etc.

So if they miss a shot, instead of me getting up to shoot, they can choose to take their free shot and move the cue ball anywhere they want and shoot again.

If it is a young kid, I will let them have ball-in-hand for every shot.

I suppose you could make things more difficult for the better player as well. Maybe better player has to bank or kick the 8. Or bank or kick the last two shots. Or make the 8 into the pocket his last ball went into. (Lesser skilled player plays as normal.)

Against two low ranked players, removing balls from the table works. You can't do that with an accomplished player. It's an old hustler's move to offer 4 balls off the table after the break which only opens things up for the player giving out the weight. With two players that don't run out, removing balls from the table is a great way to handicap things (and speed things along).

The better player could be forced to make his last group ball and the 8 ball in the same pocket, or bank the 8......Spotting 8 ball is tough.

I like the 'free shot' idea, but if they're too good for that, how about the free chance without the ball-in-hand? I've played people and given them the free chance on every turn (sometimes two), meaning they get to miss twice every turn (one person got three!).

With adjustment, I'm sure you can find a fair game with this...

Various special ways you must shoot the 8 ball (same pocket as your last ball, bank, etc.).

"Wild 8": opponent can combo the 8 using any of his balls [Option: call 8 or not].

Opponent removes __ ball(s) from table immediately after groups are decided.

Opponent only has to sink __ balls before the 8 (but removes no balls). [Option: opponent has choice whether or not to sink his "extra" ball(s) to get shape on the 8.]

You must shoot your group in rotation order.

You must hold your cue in your teeth.

Etc. (get creative)

A good handicap would be to let them have the last one or two balls optional. Meaning that when they get to where they only have one or two balls left they would have the option to either shoot at them or go directly to the eight.
Their skill level will determine how many optional balls you will allow. If they pocket one of their optional balls they can then go to the eight or decide to shoot at another optional ball. Once they decide to shoot at the eight the remainding optional ball or balls are removed from the table.
