8-Ball House Rules :-)

Is there any other game, sport, activity or other thing that people do that is done so differently all over the world?

The other night I went to play in a tournament here where they play 8-ball until the final 8 when they switch to 9-ball.

It seemed as if every match we were playing by different rules.

Well here is one that surprised me and I have played 8 Ball around the world with the funkiest rules you can imagine.

I break and make a stripe. In other matches we played that the table is open after the break.

So I shoot a solid in and my opponent cries foul. I argue that it's open after the break and he says no that we played the last match the wrong way. Ok fine - I give him ball in hand.

Then he proceeds to shoot stripes.

After two shots I am like what the hell? I am stripes because I made one on the break according to his "you are what you make" rule.

He says no because I fouled by NOT shooting "MY" balls then he can now choose to take my balls. I am like WTF????? The breaker is ONLY allowed to shoot at the group he made but if you come in on a foul the table is now OPEN again???

That has to be the stupidest rule ever.

I was like why don't you people get a rule book and use it??? Just play WPA rules and teach people to play the RIGHT way.

WHY WHY WHY WHY does EVERY promoter, every pool room, and every tournament director feel the need to tweak or make up their own rules to pool games???? Especially when the ONE THING that actually functions in pool is that we have a set of (should be) World Standardized Rules?

Anyway, I dumped the rest of the set to the kid and left because even had I beaten him I am sure that I would have had to fade another set of rules in my next match.

Lots of rules

Gotta say, I feel your pain. Been dealing with this stuff for more than 30 years. It didn't bother me much when I was just playing in the poolrooms. But as I got older, it just kept getting worse. I was at a bar a while back, and a guy who knows me had been beaten out of a couple of drinks by a guy on the next table, he instigated a game for $10 against me. I made sure to verify the rules ahead of time. The guy knew league rules, but insisted we play call all kisses off balls, and some other bar rule nonsense. I told him to go back to the other table, I ain't playing. If you wanna play Boys Club rules, get out of the bar, and go to the YMCA......

My Favorite Subject

There are little tournaments all over my area every week. Most are played BCA or APA rules since those are the main leagues here, but there are a few of the "Bar Rules" as well.

A few of my favorites: Single elimination but if you lose right before the final....you have to play for 3rd place....duh?

one of them has the 8 clean, the others not.

One of them is run by an old coot and if he gets into the final, he gives half the cash to somebody and leaves. Never gives u a chance to play him.

An last but not least....The APA Modified Tournament Format. My friend and i went to the opening of a pool hall near here and signed up for a double elimination APA rule tourney. I win my first match, he wins his 1st match. Then we play each other and i lose. I win my next match and so does he. I then lose my 4th match . As I am getting ready to leave they tell me i am up. WTF??? They then tell my friend he is out of it??? as my friend is getting PO'd they explain that in this format "You are guarenteed to play twice but not lose twice"

Just another reason why I don't play APA and I only go to these little bar tourneys when I feel like torturing the locals :D
