Why would he put all kinds of spin on the cue ball for a shot like that?

I've seen that dozens of times on bar boxes. The problem is the plastic cup and ball return combo that basically suspended under the slate. If a ball rolls in at speed and hits the bottom of the cup just right it trampolines back up.

The shooter didn't do anything wrong, just got bit by a design shortcoming in the table.

Relatively full hit, with a 3-rail position to the 9-ball. I think most people will hit that one firm with outside.
