Here are a few shots that won three of last four games in our single game double elimination (SGDE) tournament this weekend, with rules discussed in the other post (2nd place again). This is all on 8' bar tables, so the pockets are wider, but the table is slightly more congested.
Kick Out #1
My partner didn't get all the way out and left one stripe on the table. Fortunately for us, the leave didn't give our opponents a good out. Two ball were tied up, so they played a safety by breaking out their balls and hoping to hide my last ball. I didn't have much else to do, so I did the following:

Notice that I slopped the 8-ball in. I was nervous and I hit it too soft (babiedit), and the table almost rolled it out.

We have solids. A little more spectacular, and again we didn't get all the way out, and again, the out wasn't really available for our opponents. I stepped back up to this layout. The 3-ball is frozen on the rail, and I can barely get past the 13-ball to get to the spot I want to hit using the 1-rail kick system that's been tossed around a few times in the last month.

This is a ball-in-hand left to us. We are stripes.The 7-ball does not go for our opponents. And the rules are "call all the details." I talked it out with my partner, thinking that they can't just go for a 3 ball combo knowing the details might be "wrong." So, he executed the following. I wasn't thrilled where he put the 11-ball, as I really thought he understood that I wanted him to get the 11-ball downtable, whereas he was content to just get it off the rail.

This, IMO, is the difference between a good safety and strong safety. This is what I would have liked to have seen. In this way, this takes a two-rail soft kick safety into his balls out of play.

Nonetheless, our opponent did not want to risk a non-hit on a two rail soft safety, and opted for a dicey soft draw into the 8-ball safety (another shot that would have been out of play if the 11-ball was downtable). He hit the 8-ball too hard, and sold out.

For SGDE, with oddball rules, each choice became a different chess challenge compared to, say, World Standardized Rules or IPT rules on 9' tables, race to anything else other than one. I think if we were playing against professionals, we would have lost all of these games and rightly so. They are simply able to get out of situations better than amateurs. But, this was a C/B amateur affair, so these type of moves in these types of situations are going to give us the best shot at winning if there's any chance at all.
