8 ball solid racking spot

Hi,

I just saw a Racking Secret DVD by Joe Tucker and while the 9-ball part was extremely informative, I was dissapointed by the lacking amount of information about the 8-ball break (he basically racked 3 times and that's all). Having watched the pros, I always racked from the rail no matter the game, but I see that I was wrong and I think I need to start racking more from the box instead.

Can anyone enlighten me, what is the solid spot for racking in 8-ball and briefly explain the theory about it ?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure I get this unless you mean breaking from the box instead of the rail. Breaking from near the middle of the table transfers the power more evenly throughout the rack and is probably why most pros break from there. The reason many break 9 Ball from the rail is mainly because the wing ball or one in the side is wired from there.

That said, every table breaks differently.

Good question... where do the pros break from on an eight ball rack? I assume it is from the long rail side if eight on the break wins and from somewhere in the middle if eight on the break does not count?

Most pros I've seen break similar to 10 Ball, near the head spot. And since the 8 on the break doesn't win I rarely see them play a second row break from the side rail.

In rack 19 of the recent TAR match between John Schmidt and Corey Deuel Schmidt's break wasn't working so he tried the side rail and it led to a bunch of clusters and a 33 minute game of safeties.

But you know how pros are - anything that works they'll go with. But generally it seems they find the best results from a square hit on the head ball from near the center of the table similar to the 10 Ball break most of them use.
