8-ball tournaments

Are there any 8-ball events in the Tri-State area for "A/B" players? The Tri-State Tour is almost exclusively 9-ball, but I prefer the strategy of 8-ball. I'd like to put my game to the test against the very top 8-ball players. Any ideas?

Thanks!

The very best 8-ball players in the Tri-State area rarely play 8-ball. It's the unfortunate yet simple truth. If you wanted to put yourself to the test, I can give you a list of players who you might be able to arrange a date with but I can assure you, some form of a wager would need to be involved for any to play the game.

If anything, the Tri-State Tour does usually have at least 2 8-ball events a year. The next one is in May. You'll meet a bunch of those players if you attend that event.

8-ball

Jude, thanks for the offer but I'm not interested in playing for money. I will definitely be playing in the 8-ball May Tri-State though. The only other event I know is the US Amateur which is a mixture of 8-ball and 9-ball, and of course the APA Regional Tournements.

Don't forget the new Planet Pool 8-ball tournaments. Will be some good competition there.

Any of you guys know or heard of a player there, originally from Michaigan, names Phil Wines?

Big guy, maybe 6'4", 225", hairy as the day is long and one hell of a strong shooter?

Heard he has moved to the New York area and has played in a few of the Joss tournaments and has placed in the top 10 a few times.

He's and old buddy of mine from Flint and have lost contact with him for many years.

He used to play quite a bit with Ronnie Wiseman here, even up, and always did fairly well. Of'course they were old buddies and playing more or less for practice and experience "cheap sets"...

Just wondering if anyone has seen him or knows him....

Thanks...

I know that the next Planet Pool 8 ball event is in Salisbury MD, close to the Delaware boarder. IMO, it shouldn't be that bad of a drive (4 hours from NYC.)

shouldn't be that bad a drive at all..........usually when i go to nyc, it only takes me about 3 hours once i'm in baltimore to get to nyc, salisbury should be no more than 3-3.5 hours unless you hit traffic.

thanks

Great, I will definitely look into this. Thanks!

Hobokenapa,
I was curious, as reflected by your screen name I assume you are a member of the APA, if so, what is your APA rating?
If you are looking to test yourself against the area's best 8-ball players you had better be a SL7, because IMHO anyone lower rated doesn't have a chance.

I disagree.....

If he is talkin about Gambling, then you might be right.

However, I don't think anyone has a chance of being a better player unless they consistantly practice and play against players that are better than they are. Playing people your own or less of a skill level will not make you as much better as if you learn from those better than you.

Also, I whole heartedly feel that playing on a pool league is bad for your game. Usually, you will always be playing against people that are lower skill level than yourself and that makes you relax and not tighten up your game.

I'm not quite sure what you are disagreeing to but, I will attempt to explain it differently.

First, he already said he wasn't interested in playing for money, so he probably isn't going to get a game anyway.

Second, I think you missed my point, or maybe I wasn't being clear enough, anyone of the of the Tri-state area's (or any other area for that matter) best 8-ball players will eat these league players up without working up a sweat, so he had better be at least a SL7 to have somewhat of a chance to compete.

Third, I honestly believe that playing against better players or gambling will improve your game, and that playing in the leagues causes your game to get stalled at a certain level because you are continually playing against the same people week after week and most (not all) league players never seem to improve much because they are only playing recreationally and/or for social reasons, and they are not exposed to the better players.

Absolutely. I am an SL7, and I want to play players at the next level above me. I do play in the APA but that is a team event, and the focus is on getting the team to Vegas. My initial question arose because I'd just won my fourth straight 8-ball tournament all from the hot seat, and all on 9ft tables, but I'm not going to get any benefit keep doing this. I want to find where the 'A' 8-ball players are, and stretch myself. Unless I play people better than me I won't improve. But everyone wants to play 9-ball, a game that I just don't enjoy that much.

On the money thing, I have to be in a tournament to get my "A" game. I'll be more focused on a tournament for little or no cash that a $200 wager on one set outside a tournament. If it takes money to get an "A" player to play then I guess that's what I'll have to do, but being in a tournament full of A players playing for next to nothing is what will get me excited, and what I am looking for. I'd drive 5-6 hours to play in a pro/semi-pro 8-ball tourney.

Congrats on your previous successes, and best of luck to you in your quest to improve.

The Planet Pool events will defintely have very strong competition, great experience.

One question for you though, do you by any chance play out of Willow Billiard Lounge?

Planet-Pool 8-ball

Just wanted to give you some more information on the type of players you will meet in the Planet-Pool 8-ball. We have an Amateur posting - which means no pros. We have in our regular 9-ball tour our "Top A" players, which most are our pros - then we have our "A" players who regularly place mid to high in the cash. A few of those players attended the first 8-ball event this year. Then the remaining players were league and/or new to the tour.

We will be in several different locations for our 8-ball events. It's a lot of fun - shorter days (no 100 player fields... good rest for me). Keep an eye on our web site Planet-Pool we have a few dates where the locations are to be determined - but most are filled in. Also - please be aware that the table size will vary. During our 9-ball tour we only play on 9 ft tables - the 8-ball tour will switch between bar box and the other various sizes available - the size of the tables will be posted on the schedule information.

The event in Salisbury will be on their bar box tables we will be running a 9-ball event consecutively. There is a room full of 9-fts, and then a separate room of bar box tables.

It should be a lot of fun - and another great tournament!

I do practice there when I get the chance which, alas, is not that often giving constraints of my job.

We may know one another, I used to play there myself.

Speaking of Willow, maybe you guys can help me out.

I've been there a few times, found the place cozy and the tables in decent condition. There were two players there that caught my attention:

One was a small, skinny Asian guy (I would guess Chinese), he played lights out. The other was a Latino/Hispanic dude that has a very unorthodox form; he splayed his legs outwards in a V and bends straight over the shot, a slow stroke and also shoots very sporty.

On those given nights I would say that the two of them were the best players in the room by a mile. Do you guys know who I'm talking about?

Hey Roger,

I am very familiar with both of those individuals, as I know both of them.
The small Asian guy (vietnamese) is Kwa Nguyen, used to play on the Joss Tour and Pro Events, more interested in playing Texas Hold'Em now. Very nice guy, introduce yourself to him.
The other guy is by your description, Antonio Guerraro, plays on the Tri-State Tour at the A, A+ speed. Equally a nice guy.
They will be, on any and all evenings, the best players in that room.

Hi, Jude. I'm wondering.... Who are some of the best 8 ball players in our area. And are the top 8 ball players the same guys who take it in 9 ball? Just curious...
