8 foot or 9 foot cloth?

I'm replacing the cloth on the moderately well used table at our local Senior Center. Since they help out another club that I belong to I am doing it for free if they buy the cloth. Done it and leveling before, not a big problem. Nearest mechanic we could pay for is more than an hour and a pass away, so they'd be paying big bucks just for travel before they even set foot in the room. Apparently they are a bunch of yahoos that don't do good work anyway.

Here's my problem:

The table measures (bumper edge to bumper edge) 46 inches by 92 inches, so is two inches wider and four inches longer than the 44x88 table I have at home. I believe this should be considered a 4 x 8 standard sized table I’ve talked with the supplier and Championship, both of whom told me this is a 4 x 8 oversized, and that I need to be ordering cloth for a 9 foot table and cutting it down. From what I can figure, the size of the cloth will be 51 x 96, so I will have about an inch or so on each side to handle the 4 x 8 slate and wrap it around to staple down. Is that enough, or should I just tell them to go with the 9 foot size, which will give me about 5 inches on each side to work with, but much of that would just be cut away and wasted.

Don’t mind the work of cutting so much, but it will add some cost for purchase, and as a good citizen, trying to keep their costs down.

So relying on the experience of some of you out there who do this for a living, what size cloth should I tell them to order, 8 or 9 foot?

As always, thanks in advance for the help.

Get the 9', or you should be able to order it for an oversize 8. You figure the cloth will be 51x96...slate on an oversize 8 is 53x99, thats a pretty tight stretch with no material to work with.

Yes, that is kind of the conclusion I came to also. Most of the big places do only 7, 8 and 9 foot, which is too bad since we'll end up paying for some that we don't use. That's just the breaks.

Thanks for the quick response.

I've given them the baby bear, mama bear and daddy bear options: Championship Mercury at $172, Gorina Basalt at $247 and Championship Tour at $311. It looks like any of the three will work great, and for the most part the players at the senior center are lucky if they hit the ball straight, much less worrying about minor aspects of the cloth. They'll be happy with something that isn't worn out like what is there now.

Definitely an oversized 8. Everyone I buy from sells 8' as well as oversized 8' cuts. buying a 9' cut will just end up causing you to trim a bunch of it away.
If they tell you they can only get 9' cloth they are likely padding their profit margin.
The main consideration is the rails. 66" cloth will need to have rail cloths added for anything over 7'.
78" cloth will allow you to get all 6 rails off the edge.
You're really only saving about 8" buying oversized 8' cuts, but every inch is $$$

Get an 8' Oversize cut of cloth in the style you want. The rail pieces should also be precut.
Shop around - several places sell that way.

are 7' 3pc. slate tables considered to be"oversized" 7'?

I always buy the 9'. The premium on price is not much and it provides room for error. Also, if you ever have a situation where you have spare cloth on hand, the 9' increases your resale options. I've got a couple 860's on the shelf in my basement for future use. Given how long the lead time is for new Simonis cloths (at least for some of the colors), I ordered some a while ago, it took 4 months to arrive.
