8 man private at home league

As I enter my 50's I still enjoy pool but I can't stand the leagues anymore. The nasty bar tables, league fees, paying a buck or more a game, and some of the people. Call me a whine ass.

If you played Tap or APA you understand the handicap system. I fall into the decent 6 ranking and really enjoy playing against my skill level or better players.

I live in the the Cleveland/Medina area of Ohio and there is only one decent pool room within 30 minutes drive but everyone there prefers 9 ball. Nothing against the game, I just prefer 8.

I have a really nice 9ft Gold Crown in a finished basement and the thought was to try to find similar skill level people who also have home tables and start a private league.

Wishful thinking is 8 guys, 500 or more initial buy in, play once a week with a 14 week round robin where every person would shoot a match home and away. Really keep it a gentleman's game.

Regular league rules apply, no handicap, 3 races to 5, and you would get a point for each race win. The ending payout would be based on points. Hopefully everyone would live within a 30 minute drive or so.

Anyone done something similar and how did it work out for you?

Worked out well, but I would overeat and crash out, often🤣

I would join in a heat beat, the drive would just be too long for me.

Not a bad idea Chad. Let me know when and where.

Great concept…. However do you really want strangers in your house.
People would need to be screened but I still believe there is plenty of honest people out there. Again, it's starts to narrow the field down requesting that all 8 individuals have there own home tables and be skilled 6 and higher.

Through our league I have reached out to a few already. This is something I am just thinking about now with the intent of maybe trying it in the fall.

Oddly enough I met a gentleman when I was looking at used tables and I had went to his house. In his basement he was selling an 8ft GC and was buying two new 9ft diamonds to add to his other diamond. He had 3 tables in his basement just so he and his retired buddies could shoot in the mornings.

Beautiful pool room.

You said above, " ... it's starts to narrow the field down requesting that all 8 individuals have there own home tables and be skilled 6 and higher ....

Yep, narrows things down bigtime and hard to get things started.

I started playing one day a week to practice with someone on my league team 10+ years ago. We would trade days hosting and provide a meal and the group grew.

Also, along the way others that had tables joined the group and we now rotate hosting among several people's house on a weekly basis. We play scotch doubles and switch partners, so everyone gets to partner with everyone else. This is all just for fun, takes 3-4 hours and works well. 4-6 people works best.

If you can't get a private league going, you might consider just playing for fun and finding others that have tables in your area and make new friends. From there you can try to make whatever happen you want.

Good luck with your private league concept. Like Scor said above -- you might have a better chance finding strong players that want what you want at your pool hall (or league). Try to start an 8-ball league there?

I hope it works out for you... I'd be a part of it if local.
If I knew 4-8 people I'd do it here.

Same here. Only my closest friends get to play in my house, and that's not often, because they are bigger bangers than I am. Scott Lee did stop by and give me a lesson once.
I didn't invite Scott over.

We played on a sweet RKC gold crown while @Vyc did cue work for Scott. About 8mi from my house.

Yes, a friend and I started a private league for straight pool and one pocket. Everyone ante'd up and we required one match per week, round robin. I converted LAN party PHP scripts that put the brackets online. Everyone exchanged phone numbers and we texted the group when we were available for matches.
It inevitably worked great for the first weeks, and then it was tough to get matches played, with some players dropping out each time.
We had a default location, but agreed that people could play anyplace they wanted as long as both players were OK with it.
We weren't playing for much $$$, if you are able to set it up for more you would probably not have people failing to get their matches played.
