9 ball rules question

There is no called safe in 9 ball, you hit lowest ball and make a ball, you shoot again. Only game I know that you can call a safe and pocket a ball is in 8 ball.

Unless you're playing APA, then you have to keep shooting because slop counts. :(

What version of 8 Ball allows the shooter to pocket a ball on a called safety?

Dale

Pretty standard in TAP rules. Allows a weaker player to chip away balls and play safe at the same time.

Is it legal for me to call safe and then drive the lowest numbered ball into a pocket.

If this is not legal what happens after the scenario happens?

Thanks

Kevin

NO!!!! Can not pocket lowest ball on the table on a legal hit then sit down.

But I believe if it is the first shot after the break you can "push out" and pocket lowest ball on the table then turn next shot to your opponent, but I could be wrong about that, I am sure you guys will straighten me out on this in no time flat.:scratchhead:
Be careful on that push out though, you may get that shot back..

Pretty much all of them, I always go by the official WPA or BCA rules. League rules don't really count unless you are playing in that league so when someone asks about a rule, that's what I go by. Most leagues also allow a call safe in 8 ball while pocketing your legal object ball. Someone said APA does not since you don't call anything in that league aside from the 8 ball where you have to mark your pocket with at least 4 neon lights and a traffic cone even if the ball is half inch from the pocket.

there is no called shot in 9-ball. if you make a legal hit and pocket an object ball, you keep shooting.

Our NAPA league makes you call pocket on THE 9-ball only. We used to be able to call safe and drop the lowest ball in 10-ball, but that was voted out by the LO's.

Really ?Didnt know that . I tot with WPA 8 ball rules, if you call safety and you pot any of your balls, your opponent still shoots. I always tot when you shout out "safety" or "safe" , it means next turn is your opponent
:D

Yes that's right.

Calling safe and being able to pocket the ball in a rotation game is way too easy of a shot to be allowed. Our league talked about this also and we nixed that idea. The USAPL league I play is all called shot, even in 9 ball. No-one complains.

He wouldn't care since it would still be your shot.

Think about it. What if you had an easy one ball and no possibility of shape on the two. Would it be fair to be able to sink the one ball effortlessly and pass the two ball to your opponent?

While I agree you can't "safety" in 9 ball this is still one of my favorite uses of the push out. Put the 1 in and position yourself for a kick or jump on the 2 that you are more comfortable with.

The only better use of the push out is when I have no shot on the 1 ball but the 9 is hanging in a pocket. Call push out and pocket the 9 ... kill their dreams. :)

Any Call Pocket Game

The strategy Kevin outlined can be used in 14.1 (straight pool), 10 Ball or 8 ball (called pocket) but not in 9 ball since slop counts.

You made a legal hit on the ball and it went in the pocket......saying before hand that it's safety doesn't change the fact that if the lowest number object ball on the table gets struck legally and it gets pocketed unintentionally or intentionally....then you keep shooting......that's how I understand the rules of 9 ball which is considered to be a game of continuous play.....if any object balls is pocketed after making a legal hit on the lowest number object ball on the table, then the player must keep shooting........"continuous play rule" applies. Appearing below is WPA rule 2.5 for 9 ball.

If the shooter legally pockets any ball on a shot (except a push out, see 2.4 Second Shot of the Rack – Push Out), he continues at the table for the next shot. If he legally pockets the nine ball on any shot (except a push out), he wins the rack. If the shooter fails to pocket a ball or fouls, play passes to the other player, and if no foul was committed, the incoming player must play the cue ball from the position left by the other player.
