if pros race to nine, who is considered a pro? Jeff carter? Gil? Sergio? Ike is definitely a pro... Tom McClusky...Dave Coles? Piggy? Just trying to think of some people who are more likely to show up than say...johnny archer which is an obvious pro but in chicago we have a lot of guys that are kinda questionable, define pro I guess...

Who will decide who is a pro and who isn't? Who will supply the muscle to throw out the "pro" who doesn't agree with the decision? It's like the "no masters" tournaments in Beloit. They are a joke with all the masters players who are allowed in.

You better state the requirements for "pro" on this website so everyone can see the caliber of player that will be interested, or not. It's the fair thing to do for all concerned.

No Intent To Hijack...

It's like the "no masters" tournaments in Beloit. They are a joke with all the masters players who are allowed in.

Sorry to hear you feel that way but an honest effort is put forth with the Beloit events to weed out players. National master's lists are checked and then state lists are "considered". When still in doubt playing ability (references and/or results) are checked too. I'm sure a few have slipped through the process but none of those has won an event.

In general, anytime you draw a line (master/no master, a/b/c/d) you have close calls on either side of the line. All you can do is try to give it your best shot and be willing to adjust.

Great to see Chris's still having events too!

here is your answer .... Jeff-was in the 90's but not anymore, Gil-no, Sergio-no, Ike-no, Me- GOD no , Dave-no, piggy might not run 5 balls playing 9-ball( one-pocket he might run 8:thumbup:) pro to me is some one who can compete on a regular basis with the top players in the country. Or someone who travels to big tourny's and does well regularly( top 16) most of the people you mentioned are good short stops. They will beat pros occasionally but not regularly.

Are you kidding me? those tourny's are phenominal, I have no clue how you play, but if you think there are alot of master players in that tourny then you have alot of peoples games over-rated.The people that run the tourny do a great job of rating players. You'll never be perfect when handicapping players speed but they are close. you should be happy there are events like Beloit for you to play in. when I started playing you had to play even or not play. These are my views right or wrong . Tom

More pros

To be honest, I wish there were MORE pros that played in the tournaments. I have only played against one pro ever... I lost 9 to 1 playing Rodolfo Luat and still felt that I had a chance to win at least three other games. I want to know how my game stacks up. I work for a living...playing pool is fun for me. Don't get me wrong, I like to win. But, I also want to be the best regardless of who I am playing! When I am playing someone better than me...I am learning with every shot that they take (or dont take). Hell, pay the entry fee and don't buy yourself in the calcutta...you are only out the $30 or $40 to play and you get to play at least two sets...that is still cheaper than gambling.

Players considered PRO STATUS. As follows.... AZ BILLIARDS MONEY LIST.
Play In more then 50% of PRO tournaments.
I am a seasoned player I think I will know who is and who is not. I will not make someone a pro status player if it's not EARNED.
So if Larry Nevel plays he is a Pro player, etc...

Just as a heads up, since you like talking about the good old days (at least regarding handicaps in other posts and how everyone played even or not at all), in the good old days, most tournaments that had handicaps determined that a player was a pro by whether or not he/she had played in any tournaments that was a $250 entry fee or more... just so you know...

I love how you say larry nevel is a pro but he isn't on the money list, in fact he's only made like 6,000 this years in tourneys, but he's a pro. This is why the bigger tournaments in chicago suck and you only got like 30 players instead of a larger field with more players that are no doubt amature players...not pros. How about this, Sergio Perez will play just about anybody in chicago even up, but he's not a pro. He doesn't work and plays santos sambajon even up for thousands of dollars, but he's not a pro? Oh wait, thats right. They played one-pocket even up...not nine ball.
Here's my opinion, example for Pigy Banks-lets say there is a three point shootout contest where pros have to spot 5 extra shots or minutes to non-pros. Grand prize is $20,000. And... Yao Ming shows up and wants to play. Do you honestly think that they should/would let yao compete at the amature level?
If we use Tom's reasoning, yes we do. Because he's a professional center, not a professional three point shooter.

Jeff Carter example-How about Larry Bird? Well, using the same reasoning, he would play as an amature because he hasn't been a pro in years!

BTW my point with larry's tournament winnings this year, is that by definition IDK if you could say larry is making a living on 12,000 dollars a year, thats if he matches in the second half of this year with what he did in the first...
How about this, Ike was on the IPT but he's not a pro? a little partial are we?
