9-ball VS. 10-ball

<---Dumb and Dumber
:o I've heard so many times about how 10-ball is so much harder to run a rack than 9-ball because of one extra ball. I don't agree with this at all. I agree with the break, it is tougher to make a ball, but when you do, it's the same as 9-ball. If there were all 15 balls in the rack then I could see the point, but 10, compared to 9, c'mon! I think it's the blue stripe that psyches people out, LOL. I know when I play 10-ball and I run all the way out to the 10, I forget how to shoot because it has a blue stripe. The 9 was no problem because I'm used to it, but that dawg gone 10 seems to swell up and won't fit in the pocket. Does anyone else have this problem? I say "to hell with the 10-ball". Even if I play 8-ball from now on I'm taking the 10 out and using two 9-balls. ;)

That was very amazing, lol. '' I forgot to shoot because the ball is blue '' lol. Thanks for Rude Dog for making me laugh. Keep them coming :D

Hi Rude Dog,

So many players are talking about ten ball because it is a more difficult game. Watch some top players in ten ball and notice that the ten ball rarely and I mean rarely, goes in on the break. Some players that avoid a guy with a great nine ball break will play the same guy ten ball all day. That extra ball makes choosing routes between balls more difficult. Efren and his fellow countrymen grew up on rotation. The extra six extra balls on the table make running racks virtually impossible. But its great practice!

10 ball is as far as i'm concerned is an much better test of skill.

Instead of trying to make the corner ball off of the break. Your now challenged to make ANY ball on the break or try to pocket the 1 in the side. Where 9 ball patterns are usually wide open with a good break, 10 ball by comparison usually ends up with harder patterns and more clusters. Negotiating the balls becomes more difficult, and it takes a bit more skill to run out. I think one must DEFINITELY be more skilled to run the patterns created by 10 ball.
I know people that play 9 ball who break 2 or 3 balls in all the time and consistently have easy outs. BUT when you put that extra ball in the mix, NOW they are completely lost.
In 9 ball, I've lost to people who have less skill but a better break. Where in 10 ball, i have NEVER had that happen.

PLUS....not many arguments break out about the rack in 10 ball.
It just stops all the garbage.

I travelled around to some of the camel stops to watch, and whenever it was a 10 ball event, i REALLY saw some awsome pool.
9ball events, and you'd have people arguing about the rack.
10 ball, and the players pretty much just shut up.
To watch some of the 10 ball racks that got negotiated was awsome.
They were WAY better than the 9 ball events.

Superstroke

I never play 10 ball but when i first started playing nine ball i just couldn't find the spot on the nine because of that damn stripe. I mentioned this to a real good player and he had the same problem when he first started. Anyway the stripe is no problem anymore but i still mss it more than i should.

Dog...a number of years ago I knew a guy that was a pretty good player in this one room but he had a history of gagging on the 9 ball. He would run a rack from 1 through 8 as pretty as a picture and just do whatever he could to choke on that 9. He got so pissed at this and his growing reputation which was starting to build, that he ordered a bunch of 9 balls to practice with by spraying a super thin smudge of colored paint on each 9 to match the color of the other balls. His philosophy was that he wanted to get used to just seeing the 9 ball up there and not get freaked out when the time came. It was funny as hell, but believe it or not, the SOB really did start making more 9 balls over time and not gag it like he used to. Could ordering a whole bunch of 10's be your solution?

Hey Drivermaker, that was just a joke. I don't have a problem with the 10-ball, or any ball for that matter. I can throw any 9 balls on the table and run out, regardless of the stripe or number. My point in this thread was the fact that I hear all too often about how 10-ball is so much tougher to run out than 9-ball. I also mentioned that I agree with the break being tougher to make a ball than it is in 9-ball, but after the break the game is the same. 1 more ball makes no difference.

How do you rack in ten ball? is it 1, 2, 3, 4, balls in each row with the middle being the ten ball. This is one of the few games I have never played or seen played in 27 years of playing and I would like to give it a try.

rude dog,

try beating the ghosts in both 9ball and 10 ball and see how you fair.......
I've done this for years and after the break the game is the same. Of course the 10-ball has gotten in my way on run-outs, but so have all the rest of the balls. The break is the only difference in these 2 games.

Yep, one in the front, ten in the middle, rest don't matter. Ring games have made 10 ball more popular. Ten ball is a bit tougher from the foul standpoint.

Hey Rude Dog. I agree with you. The break is what makes the difference between those two games. It is true that the 10 ball adds extra possibilities of balls being tied up, but as far as "being a tougher game", I haven't found that to be the case. I can't make a ball on the break playing 9-ball either, so personally, I see no difference! ;)

Wow, I finally got someone to agree with me. How much do I owe you for that one Jimmy? Maybe you need a break lesson, huh? I once made 10 balls on the break playing 9-ball and I can teach you how to do the same. Just send me $199.99 and I will send you a tape of me doing it. If you're not 100% satisfied with your break in just 1 day, I will send you a large cup of coffee coupon. Peace :D

The check is in the mail!

Thats pretty special Rude Dog. too bad the you had to spot the 9 and give your opponent ball in hand. Oh well, at least now you can shoot for 11 balls. You gotta control the wingball well enough to go into the corner pocket, get thrown back out and go into the side. Im working on a 23 ball 8-ball break i might have a few tips for you if you email me. Each letter in my response is worth $12, or you could trade me. Just picka finger off one of your hands and a toe off one of your feet and we'll call it even. :) :) :)
