Its a must have in my eyes and $13.00 is a nice cheap price to have it on the shelf.

if you learn just ONE shot that you didn't know......13 bucks is worth it.

This is a *must* have book!

This books contains what I call "shot fundamentals". These are various shots which can apply to many different situations. Or learning about how the balls interact in various situations. Also clusters of balls and possible shots which can be made.

Learning the shots from this book is like extracting oil from a dried up oil well. It may appear that there is no oil, but by injecting steam, they can get a little more out of the well. Same thing with 99 critical shots. It may appear there are no shots on the table, but after learning these shots and especially learning the fundamentals of the shots and what makes the balls do certain things, you might just see a shot or two on the table.

Some of these shots are so obscure (like 5 clustered balls and the last in the chain of balls is wired to go into a pocket), that I make a point of calling the ball into the pocket (sometimes twice) and being darn sure my opponent understands I am calling *that* ball into that pocket.

They will accuse you of "lucking in the ball" if you don't make it clear beforehand which ball will go where. It is not luck!

The problem with this book (and with most books and videos) is that it is small, and difficult to stay open, not designed to take to the practice table. Many of the shots I already know and don't need to practice. So I may need to practice a shot on page 10, then page 14, then on pages 45 through 50, etc. I was spending too much time hunting through the book for the shots I wanted to practice.

So I made my own diagrams of the shots I wanted to practice and placed them in a 3 ring binder. Now I just flip the page and there is my next shot to practice. I also practice shots from other books, so the 3 ring binder contains the shots from all sources. (Shots which can not be described with words.)

Anyway practice and learn the shots from this book you are not familiar with. You may start seeing shots which you would not have noticed before. And you will begin to see your lesser skilled opponents by-passing easy to make shots (because they don't know).

In addition to the "Book of the Decade" membership fee like at Sam's Club and Costco. $39.95

And, the Oprah book club, under the table payoff reimbursement fee. $25k

It's a great book with a lot of good shots. Well worth the price. The writing style of the book makes it easy to understand. The diagrams are not to scale which makes it difficult to get the gist of some of the shots. However with a little patience and practice it's not much of a problem. This book also has a great deal of Straight Pool information. Towards the end Ray has set up diagrams with clusters of balls, you pick out what the best shot is. The diagram at the tops of these pages shows the problem, then underneath (you can cover it with a piece of paper) is a diagram with the correct shot. All in all a great book

Just ignore the first chapter

The thing that turned me off this book was the first chapter on equipment and mechanics . It says (And I'm paraphrasing here as I don't have a copy in front of me) that "This is the way Ray Martin holds the cue, and as he's a world champion it is therefore the only correct way to do it."

If you can get past thatm advice to go out and buy a Balabushka and the old-fashioned diagrams, the actual shots are well worth working through.

Given that Mr. Martin is still very active it would be great if he would have an updated version published with modern diagrams, better content on mechanics, modern equipment information and some more 9-Ball specific content.

Good beginner's book. Certainly has a wealth of information that most everyone can learn from. It could use a revision to correct a few mistakes and clarify a few of the diagrams.

For $13, there's not much reason not to buy it.

I spoke with Ray about that subject at Grady's Gulf Coast Classic this past December. He said he'd love to publish a new edition of the 99CS, but that he relied heavily on his collaborator Rosser Reeves, who unfortunately died several years back. Evidenty he's not found anyone else who he's comfortable working with.

The book is one of our classics, and I believe it to be a must for one-pocket and straight pool players. Every pool player can learn something from this book.

well, guess what? yep, you guessed it, i finally found my copy of 99 Critical Shots tonight. guess it was right where i put it a couple of years or so ago. so i called Muellers, and even got ahold of them in time to cancel my complete order. so i guess i am about $13 ahead of the game today.

guess i better get busy reading it.
