A Briesath Tip and DigiCue Blue Improving Follow through.

During a workshop about 2 years ago, Jerry Briesath said to lay cue across the rail, cueball nearby, and just stroke into ball with no bridge. Result will be a nearly "Perfect Stroke!" he said to the assembled participants.

Now, I've been using a DigiCue Blue to try and improve my stroke. And even when set on Intermediate Level, I was having a hard time getting better than mediocre to OK scores on Follow Through. 5, 6, occasional 7. So last week I tried the no bridge rail shot and suddenly 8, 9, and 10 Follow Through scores began to appear. This allows me to begin to FEEL what correct Follow Through feels like. So the next step (Work in Progress) is getting same results with a Bridge. I figure closest bridge to just laying shaft across the rail is open bridge with my glove on. That seemed to work...so I decided to experiment with open bridge and then closed bridge and see if I could still get high FT scores. And earlier today I shot 5 out of 10 "Tens"...including four tens in a row, the last 4 shots. This improvement from an intermediate player after only a few days of trying something new seemed very significant to me. I rarely see dramatic shifts like this, so maybe it will work for others.

Two next steps remain in this work in progress:

1) Add shooting an object ball type normal shot, perhaps straight in shots, but still an exercise (same shot into same pocket repeatedly).

2) See if I can achieve new higher Follow Through scores in normal game play type practice, like playing the Ghost or trying to improve my high run in Straight Pool.

So in conclusion, I find the Feedback provided by DigiCue Blue a powerful tool for improving your stroke. And if Follow Through is a weak spot, try Jerry Briesath's cue on the rail with no Bridge tip and see if your FT scores go up.

And I will continue experimenting with improving my own.

Just want to clarify after rereading post...Initially there's no object ball. You just shoot the cueball into a pocket. When I scored 10 4x in a row earlier yesterday, I was shooting cueball into third diamond and banking it into the side pocket next to me. Starting tomorrow I'll be resuming Normal Pot the Object Ball practice.

Just want to add...and it's only been a few days...that I'm finding it difficult to transfer my improved scores on follow through to real game (practice) situations. I show some improvement but the four 10s in a row hasn't recurred yet. Still, during a zoom lesson with Bryan Mitchell of FXBILLIARDS ( recommended!) he did feel my fundementals were more solid. And I did get a couple of isolated 10s during the lesson.

To me it looks life your forearm is perpendicular to the floor when the tip of your cue is 4 inches or more from CB. Move your grip hand farther back so that your tip will be at CB (SET position)
when your forearm is perpendicular to floor. Stroke through to a defined “FINISH” on your chest. Forget about the CB once you’re in SET position and just think about stroking through to FINISH each time .. follow through is automatic and consistent I spent a few days in Madison with Jerry
too, with break time spent with Larry Nevel .. great time! Good luck!

@Althair I can't get past the first sentence. It's not making sense. Possible for you to explain this a little better?

"lay cue across the rail, cueball nearby, and just stroke into ball with no bridge"

Wait a second, is this where you stand by one side pocket, place the cue ball 8 inches off the rail, then aim the cue one handed and laying on the rail and then shot it into the side pocket on the other side of the table?

Challenge someone at your local pool hall to play one handed for $20 a rack. You'll figure it out shortly.

Yes but you can shoot long shots too. I think that you should get into regular stance and just lay your bridge hand a few inches away from the side of cueball so only difference is no bridge. Then advance on to open bridge and closed bridge and see how results change. But yes, cue ball needs to be near rail.
