A GREAT CONPIRACY THEORY

Let’s say that you own one of the more important pool tournaments of the year called the Mosconi Cup. It’s very popular but in recent years you’ve had a problem. That problem is that team USA is routinely beaten like a drum by team Europe. This leads to declining interest as there seems to be little if any American talent upcoming whereas Europe and Asia keep turning out pool monsters. OH, MY WHAT TO DO TO RESCUE MY TOURNAMENT which has made me big bucks in the past but seems unlikely to keep doing so if USA continues to suck.

What a conundrum. Well there is this Russian guy that might just be the best player on Earth that is living in Indiana and just needs a permanent Green Card to stay. If I pay off the immigration people and put him on Team USA my problem will be solved. Where is my brown envelope that I can place a nice stack of $100 bills into to grease the wheels to make this happen.

Did they compensate him for not being in the Reyes cup? Sometimes conspiracy theories are just that.

They didn't need to do that, all they had to do is put him on the US team. I doubt he has his American passport yet as it's a notoriously long process. So what are the rules for representing team USA? There don't seem to be any.

Some of the comments on fb saying an American player won the 2024 US Open are even more ridiculous. You don't become or feel American in 2-3 years, especially when you have a Russian fiancé and speak Russian at home. This is a trophy for Russia for sure

you forgot the interlude where our great federation here in europe banned him from playing pool because he was born in the wrong country..

He was not banned from playing pool that I know, he just couldn't officially represent Russia. He could play as an independent athlete which he did for a while. It doesn't mean I support that decision, but it's important to be accurate

As far as I am aware, only Matchroom recognise Gorst as "American".

As much as I love Fedor and he is an adopted son of the USA, he is Russian and nothing will ever change that.

But I am happy for him to play for Team USA in the Mosconi as he does have an affinity with the US.

you're clueless. he's in the process of becoming a citizen. he has more than an 'affinity' for the US. Both him he and his new bride love it here and will soon be citizens just like fools like you. well, i guess you're a citizen. coulda swam the rio grande for all i know.

And tell me, where did he learn pool? And what do you figure the first language of their children will be?

i don't give a shit pal. at least they are going thru the correct steps to become full-fledged citizens and not just some border-hopping illegals. i don't know where you live, euro somewhere??, but in this country we welcome people that are running from war and oppression AS LONG as they do it right. BTW, they both speak perfect English and i'm sure any kids they have will too.

Ukrainians are running from war, Russians are running form conscription, very important distinction. If there was a conscription in your country and all the pool players were deserting to England, how would you feel about it? Follow up question, would that make them English?

Some things need to be kept to oneself and not projected in public. But alas, the world is filled with lies, mistruths, and conspiracy theories. In truth, the Mosconi Cup is really just a paid exhibition and doesn’t mean all that much in the grand scheme of things. But Jason, you say, it is one of the biggest events with the most pressure in the world, with real money at stake? True, it is, but it is also just a parody of the Ryder Cup in golf. I don’t think there is a thread of evidence that foul play was involved to make our Russian friend a citizen, but I’m not sure he should be on the team. This is why the Mosconi Cup is just an exhibition; Asia has not been invited, and we are all aware of their status in the pool world. No one is shooting better than SVB and Gorst at the moment so Europe will have its hands full this year. At this level, swings will go back and forth no matter who is the better team on paper.

Long live the Mosconi Cup and conspiracy theories.

Agree big time. MC is a made-4-tv, BRIT tv to be honest, exhibition. Short sets of 9b are crapshoots and make for good sweating even to a non pool fan. People make WAAAAY too much out of the event and its outcome.

Wide decision. You would lose that contest juts like you lost this argument

Many have dual citizenship, pretty common thing. What language they speak at home has no bearing on anything.
In Fedors case, who knows where his true allegiance will be in the future. He seems like a really great guy. The fact that he grew up in Russia will always be there for him as he probably still has family and friends and good memories from there and that will never go away, and he should not be faulted for.
Best to support him for who he has become, and not worry about where he came from as I'm sure he's got enough on his plate at the young age he is. He is doing a great job at becoming someone to be respected in my book.
