In another thread the poster mentions that he gets chalk on his hand and on the wrap. You can also get chalk on your clothes from chalk sitting on the rail.

Pro snooker has a rule that placing chalk on the rail is a foul. Each player has his own chalk and keeps it in his pocket.

Guess snooker tournaments don't need chalk sponsorship with product placement on the table:D
 
My rule

I want to add another rule, no smoking in the pool room. I hate when the smoke gets in my lungs, eyes, clothing, hair, coat, cue case and cue. Dear smokers thanks for understanding and please smoke at home.

P.s. I am also in favor of the other two rules above but could tolerate not having them if we could just enforce my rule.

Wait, you can still smoke in Pa? That might be the only state in the union (other than Virginia) that allows it!
 
Can still smoke in IL.

For 19 more days. We did it in a phenomenal way though. Chicago banned it starting Jan 2009. So the state banned it starting Jan 2008. Wonder if we'll keep the hookah bars like NY did or if they'll close them up.

What's with all the check paranoia on this board? Are really good pool players all OCD?

I think Maryland goes NON-SMOKING on Jan 8, 2008. PA will probably be the last state in the nation to go NON-SMOKING.

This is all well and good for most players, but speaking for the shorter pool players, chalk in your pocket can HURT :eek: I end up leaning over the table a lot to reach shots on a 9' table, so I generally remove all items from my pockets before I play, it saves on the bruises to my quad's .... of course this pain is nothing compared to when I 'roll one', but let's not go there.

No way, us folks in VA and NC will probably have you beat on that race - Philip Morris headquarters in Richmond.

Colorado (where I just moved from) put the kibosh on it 1.5 yrs ago, but Georgia (where I now live) still allows it.

That said, let's not hijack this thread into a smoking/anti-smoking thing - the original post had to do with pool rules specifically.
 
no chalk on the table is a stupid rule for pool because it all comes down to comfort when u play. players like to chalk and put the chalk back down on the rail. it's ingrained into players psyche. snooker it's not so bad because traditionally they put it in their pocket anyway. but i still think it's a stupid rule. a player shouldn't be forced to keep their chalk in their pocket. i find it awkward fumbling in my pocket to get chalk out.

Lots of luck!! I too am a non-smoker and play competitively WAY less than I otherwise would. (In Tennessee, the new non-smoking exempts establishments that are "21 and over" so most, if not all pool rooms went 21 and over and still allow smoking.

If the 21 and over rule didn't apply and smoking was banned outright there is no question in my mind that pool hall attendance would improve.

Jude, was that the case at Amsterdam when N.Y. went non-smoking??

The months immediately following the smoking ban, both Amsterdam poolrooms saw a significant drop in business and poolrooms throughout New York City had problems.

It's been four years since the ban went into effect. A few rooms in New York City have since closed including one of the Amsterdam locations (the remaining one moved downtown) but it's not necessarily attributable to the smoking law since New York City real estate has been booming which is not good for a poolroom owner looking for a large space with low rent.

The current Amsterdam location appears to be doing better than the previous two which may have a lot to do with the current lack of poolrooms throughout the city.


In sum, there ARE fewer rooms but it's difficult to refer to a single reason for that. However, I do not necessarily agree with the concept that a smoking law can help/hurt business. There is definitely an immediate negative impact. The long term effects can be positive if the given poolroom can manage to stay in business.
 
I am another of those who empties their pockets before play. If there's to be a rule about leaving chalk, it needs to be 'when your inning is over, you gotta pick it up'.

And another thing, putting the chalk down (on it's side, btw) just before I bend down to shoot is a part of my pre-shot routine. I always put the chalk just to the left of me, with my left hand, been doing it for years. I also take my chalk with me when I leave the table, and have to tell people "get your own" when they complain that I take the chalk (I buy it by the box and like my own 'broken-in' cube).

It should be up to the venue to make it a rule not to put the chalk down upside down. This would, I think, satisfy most of us. I don't have a problem with chalk on the table, as long as it's right side up.
