I was looking at the ball that Fats shoots into the corner. I can't really tell if that ball lined up with the pocket. I can't really tell but does he spin the adjacent ball inable to make the dead ball go into the pocket? If you can help explain and even diagram this particular shot it would be greatly appreciated. I was watching this movie and rewinding this particular scene over and over and couldnt quite understand how he made it into the corner pocket

It's a moderately complicated combination kiss shot. The ball that goes in kisses off two other balls. The shot does not involve any spin. A similar shot is shown on page 112 of Mosconi's book "Winning Pocket Billiards."

So I took a good look at that again, the shot seems to bear a relation to a derivative of the kiss/dead carom shot but from a different angle? Am I on the right path here?

scratch!

It looks like a scratch... I think the cue ball runs up and back and follows the object ball into the corner pocket. The scene is cut with the cue ball a diamond or two up the rail from the pocket.
If only I could edit my shots like that.... cut!!!

Yes, that's what it is. There are a lot of trick shots out of the rack like that where you simply move a few balls to create a dead ball. That makes setting them up almost as easy as just racking.

Didn't Robert Byrne include this shot in his book on trick shots?
I remember making this shot because it seemed so odd to have the object ball coming straight back at you like that.

I agree it looks like a scratch in progress, my "predictive visualization" tells me that the cue ball is going to scratch then the scene is cut.

Yes, it's on page 65 of Byrne's "Treasury of Trick Shots." That's another book every pool player should have. He has four or five other nearly-full-rack shots.

time warp

Well.... I think you'd need Mr Peabody and the WABAC machine for Crane's shot to have inspired the one in the movie.
The film was released around 1960 and this match took place in 1966.

Yes I stand corrected....thanks for the input.

That was pretty cool for that shot to come up for Crane there.....I wonder if he thought of the movie when checking out the shot?

Oscar, are you out there?

Maybe Oscar Wilde was right....
Life imitating art, not the other way around.

Be well.

Sorry to talk about another shot...

Thank you for linking the youtube video of the shot that you are talking
about. I have seen this movie many, many times and never noticed that
the next shot I mention was a foul... When Fast Eddie is up at the table in
minute 1:47 of the scene you linked, check out that shot. He strikes
through the cue ball, fouling into the striped ball to sink the 2.
