A Zombiac Story: Beating My Teachers One by One

The other night I go to the pool hall and start playing. Our first "season" of our bar league is over for a few weeks so everyone's trying to practice up for the new one. Its weird, before I played in the league I could never get anyone to play with me, but now that I've played pretty much everyone in the place, they call me over for games as soon as I walk in. This very thing happened on this particular night, when "Juggalo" asked me to a game.

This guy seems to have a typical player personality for people in our bar: Big case full of nice cues; Knows what seems like EVERY rule of billards which he tries to throw on you at weird times when you have the advantage; and all in all... he's not as good as he tries to make everyone think. I had the advantage going in because I was always the lesser player, and that I try to take every game as it was, not expecting to dominate, just playing the table. He had his teammate there and it was clear that he wanted to beat the breaks off me.

I beat him pretty easy which seemed to hit him hard. We rack the second game and I beat him again by even more balls. We weren't putting money on this game so I wasn't very serious, I just wanted to have fun. His playing style is HIGHLY defensive. I'm not even sure if it helps him, but after I would run 4 or 5, or if it seemed like he was losing, he wouldn't even take a good shot. He would instead, put the ball where i couldn't shoot it well, hoping I'd hit his by accident, or calling safety doing the same thing. This got to me because it became evident to me that he thought the prior games were flukes and that he believed me to be a shitty player. He did this until I ended up with a really hard bank with the 8 sitting almost IN the pocket. I dropped the 8 and the cue at the same time and he got mad.

"That wasn't a good game." he said."Come and see me when you want to play serious." So he goes to drink and I play my friend for a while. Soon I come back and ask him to play one more before I leave. He comes to the table totally serious, and not saying a word to me. I remember him saying this is how he acts when he really wants to beat someone. Right after I break, by line of songs comes on the jukebox, and I smile. With my spirits lifted i run ball after ball, smiling and nodding my head to my music, until I drop the 8 pretty easy leaving him with 5 on.

He doesn't say anything, no goodgame or handshake, he packs up his cues and goes to the bar. This was the guy who used to give me pointers all day and critique my game. I can't tell you how happy I was. I'm flying to Virginia soon to meet my mentor and play at Obelisk. i'm planning on finally beating him too. Wish me luck.

It does feel good to beat those who used to beat you. Me? This guy gave me the 6+8 & the break and beat me out of all I had once. Now, we play sets for $100 and I win 5 to his 3...

We'll play at Obelisk first, and then Q-masters... the tables at Q-masters are a lot better (obelisk's tables: good, q-master's tables: as good as it gets without going to a tournament in vegas or something). They use non-directional and you get a lot more roll out of q-master's cloth. Obelisk is just 20 miles closer... so convenience takes me there most of the time for practice :P

And you better play me for like $1 a game so I can play you sincerely;) . Any amount of $ will do it for me. A quarter even :D

I wish I could find my old mentor. Anybody run into an older black gentleman named Mr. Willie in the Virginia area? He's probably pushing 60/65, never got his actual age. Plays extremely well (rated 9 when he played APA a few years ago, didn't lose much) with a loose bridge and grip (probably arthritis). Plays for money usually. retired Air Force... either chief or senior.

Enjoy it ...

because if you can't takem down for the cash, you can't takem down as Fatty used to say. The pocketbook is the ONLY place you can hurt a
money player.

This local guy used to give me whichever weight I wanted. Gave me the 7,8 wild and beat the pants off of me. Then he gave me the breaks and ball in hand AND THE WILD 8. Still beat the pants off of me. The other day he came in looking for a game. I told him I'd play him 10 dollar sets even. (because that's all I had). Beat him 3 straight. Then we bumped it to 20. Beat him 3 more. Then to 50 and yet again 3 more before he quits....:p
I left with 250. The 10 I had in my wallet. And the 240 of his....:p Feels awesome to finally stick it to these guys....:D

I WAS planning on playing a little pool tonight but I was gonna go to Eddie's and practice since there's almost no one there on thursdays. But I definitely don't have money to play with... I've been in a money bind for the last few months. I'm not much of a better anyway. The only thing I've ever bet on is $20 on a Super Bowl game in highschool. I might come by Rocky J's though... I get nervous when i play new people though :(

I used to go to Rocky J's when I was at UIW. Me and my friends used to hit the weekly tournament just about every week. How long have you been going there MCF??

It's been about 6 years since I was going there steadily so I don't really remember names. At the time, there was a kid who was getting to be pretty good and he was 13 at the time. I walked in a few years ago and he was there, but wasn't playing. There was also the tall white guy that worked there and started dating the hispanic girl that used to work there too. Last I heard, they had a baby and he was still working there from time to time. I know I'm being vague, but I just can't remember names. Sorry.

AAHHH the tall white guy look like Rocky Dennis.....:D The girl he is dating is Alan's sister. And they are fililpino. Alan is Rex's son. Rex (the owner) still takes care of his pool hall. As for the kid that was 13, not sure....maybe little Jon. If it's him than he's been barred for sometime now. What's your name? And where do you live now?

Wow...you knew exactly who I was talking about. Jon was the kid's name and he used to hang around David (who was also barred). Henry Rocha used to go to all those tournaments too with us. *Sigh* Good times.
BTW...My name is Juan Parra, I went by JJ a lot of the time, and I live in Dallas now. I lived in S.A. for 2 years while I was at UIW.

Can't say I know you Juan, But Henry hangs around with Tattoo Jon alot, and He used to go up there alot with Javier. Skinny javier is really buff now if you can believe it. Both of those guys play really good now. Javier is quite the better player though. Well if I ever make it down there to Dallas I'll send you a Pm. Take it easy buddy.
