Hello everybody,
Im new here and just wanted to say I really appreciate all the helpfull information I find here.

Now on to the question. I wanted to know how a low end mcdermott butt ($140) compares to a high end butt ($500 and up) if they both had the same joint and shaft?

The reason I ask this is because my buddy is a high intermediate player but is playing with a very cheap Spalding cue. I think his game will get better faster if he plays with a more consistent cue. So I told him to just get a cheap mcdermott and have a nice shaft made by a custom cue maker or get the intimidator shaft. This goes out the window if the butt is crap. So is this a good idea? The way I see it is that the shaft is what makes a good cue play good, unless I'm wrong.

Thanks in advance, Asgar

I have come to the conclusion the people will learn to play with what they have. Then if they go and change to a different cue, they will have problems and need to re-learn how to shoot.

So players should decide on the specifications of the cue they want to play with forever and *stick* with that.

This would be weight of cue, amount of deflection - shaft, taper of shaft, size of shaft at tip (11mm, 12.5mm, 13mm, etc.), brand/type of tip, and radius of tip (nickel, dime).

So if someone learns to play with a high deflection shaft and then they switch to a lower deflection shaft, they will have problems. Or if they learn to play with a low deflection shaft and switch to a higher deflection shaft, they will have problems. Same thing with weight, taper, tip, tip radius, etc.

You can get a less expensive cue which is made to certain specifications, then have a $2000 cue made to those same specifications - plays the same.

just have him ...

Why all the mix and match? Just have him buy a Lucasi or Meucci he likes.

When you say high intermediate player, what level of 9 ball player would
you rate him on a 2-12 skill level scale? It is hard for me to believe he is shooting with a Spalding stick unless it has some sentimental value.

I have 2 McDermotts. A Shamrock series that I got
for $85 on EBAY and a Sierra that's supposed to retail
for $935. I paid around $250 for it. I've got a bunch
of sticks. The Shamrock is one of my 2 worse and
the Sierra is one of my 2 best.

McDermott

Well folks, don't be suprised when you find out that McD is having cues made in China now. Don't be suprised if they have decals instead of inlays. This is exactly what they have done with the McDermott " Bludworth Origionals " to Blud's dismay.
I really hate going to a pro football or base ball game and spending $36 for six beers. They do not need to make $34 on a six pack. I feel the same way about cue manufactures who pay $18 for a cue and try and get $350 to $900 for them. A bunch of greedy crooks is what I call them.

Some of the Shamrock cues are decals, some have inlays, and I believe you're right about them being foreign made. Seems like a similar concept that Fury uses.

I had a joint collar problem with a new "one-off" McDermott mid-level cue. The white had a small chip in it that you could only see in very bright light looking at a particular angle. They fixed it perfectly in just a few days, so at least the repair work had to be done here.

As far as the regular McDermott cues, there are no "surprises" regarding the materials. They are very clearly listed on their website.

Thanks for the responses. My buddy plays about a 7 on the scale of 2-12(weird scale!). Yeah, the spalding is the first cue he bought almost 6 years ago, so it holds some sentimental value. I am just trying to get him a good playing cue for a good price.
Thanks, Asgar

Does he have a problem with the Bludworths {from China} that he and Donald are selling. When did a guy I've known for over 40 years get a halo over his head. All they have done is make our USA Bluds that we have had for years worthless. I have A bunch of older[before china] any one can purchase now! Joe Bowman

I do know that Zim is looking for an older Blud. Told him I would let him know if I saw any. He is an AZ member. Zims Rack is his online store. He is interested. I also sent you a PM.
