ABP no show US open 9 ball :(

Not sure it is the right decison

I can truly appreciate ABP wanting to raise the professionalism of the sport but quite frankly, the US Open has not done anything detrimental in that regard. The leaders of the old PBT and the IPC did in fact hurt the sport. Also if you add up both how much prize money was generated in the last 35 years from the US Open and how much of that was above and beyond player fees, you will quickly realize that the US Open and Barry has done a very good thing for men's professional pool which has in fact suffered. But not due to Barrry's actions. No one appreciates slow payment, but again in the end this is a slap in the face to someone who has done well overall for this game.

The comments about Mr Archer's behavior, at face value, suggests that there was a personal issue between these two and might have been handled otherwise.

Maybe I am wrong and this ABP decision will prove to be correct - which at this point I hope so.

But from what I can tell, unless you are willing to play in smaller tournaments, travel overseas or wait for the other few big events; the US OPEN $150-$200,000 won't be replaced any time soon.

Ciao

With so many great players not attending, they might as well cancel the event. I can understand their position. Who wants to be out the expense of the travel, hotels, & meals etc... to play in the event if there is no guarantee of getting paid if they made it far enough into the tournament to place in the money.

I for one support the APB and their decision. It's about time the players stood up for themselves and asked for better paydays. $150 - $200,000 total payout for any U.S. Open event is ridiculous. $200,000 is at least what the winner should be taking home! In the Golf & Tennis U.S. Opens the winners take home over $1 Million, so why shouldn't the best pool players in the world be getting at least a piece of that kind of pie!

Pool/Billiards can be built up to the point that tennis & golf are at, but it's going to take the right people making the right decisions at the right time, and this seems to be one of those times. More people play pool than golf & tennis combined, yet the sport is consistently viewed in a negative fashion by the public & media, and until that perception changes the sport will not receive the recognition it deserves. So this is an opportunity for the players to start building for that future.

OOPS - Just read press release on APB.com

OK I should have checked the APB website first. But I just read their statement about the boycott ending and that their players will attend.

However I still stand by my previous comments, and say good for the players for sticking together and standing up for themselves, and getting the deal worked out to their satisfaction. It's a step in the right direction.

Sorry about getting on the soapbox, it's just that the issue of how much the players get paid at these tournaments has been an issue that has bothered me for a number of years, that and the lack of respect the Sport receives.
