I was browsing thru some African handicrafts in a store and a wooden bowl caught my eye. It had a 3 tone finely grained surface, it was hard and hefty. Acacia is the name of the wood.

Any good for a butt sleeve?

Almost any wood can be used as a butt sleeve wood as it is not a structual part of the cue and almost always is installed over a dowell which gives unstable wood strength, however, other than Gabon Ebony, most cue builders use the same wood in their collars as they do in their prong. Black Acacia, as it is known, is a straight grain wood honey gold in color with red and black streaks running it's length. I would imagine it would also make a good prong wood although I have never used it.

There is also another African and Asian acacia species with a more subtle color, nonetheless, still gorgeous.
