I’m out here in Las Vegas at the west gate for the acs nationals. I went maybe 10 years a go and I got to say if you’re thinking about coming it’s not worth the trip. The acs is almost dead. I think standard only had 36 teams. That’s pretty lame for nationals.
Here’s some notes
1) bad enough that your playing on valleys but they all play different. Some have mercury ultra on them. Some have tournament cloth. Pick one lol I don’t care if a bar box plays slow as lomg
As they all play the same.
2) even though the tournament is small and half the table are empty you’ll play one match at noon one day and not play until 5 pm the next. It makes no sense.
3) good thing is a guy runs minis all day long. It s really easy and quick to get in one. They are only $10 a pop but you get to play.
4) vendors are few of course.
5) I’m not a fan of the west gate. The food options are limited. Almost all of them are mid or fancy restaurants. So there is no cheap food court like most have. Plus it’s close to nothing. The Tropicana was a dump but you could cross the street to the mgm or New York New York. For plenty of choices. Here nothing. You would have to take a $20 cab ride a way. The mono rail is here but if you are on a time crunch that doesnt work.
The hotel is clean and nice. The buffet for breakfast was really good and Benihana was really good and we had a lot of fun
6) they aren’t playing on the new valleys but they are out here. It looks like just a more more modern valley. Pockets are 4.5 instead of 4.75 still I don’t know why you would pay more for this then you would a diamond. Get an old valley and tighten the pockets a little. Save yourself 5 grand lol

I guess the apa is taking its toll on other leagues. People who couldn’t win in the acs or bca can there so they are migrating to apa or even tap. If you’re going to just have some fun cool. But if you’re in it for the money even if you win it’s not gonna cover what you spend. That’s not really the reason I play so that doesn’t bother me.

I am not a fan of the Westgate hotel, just walking through the lobby is a cloud of cigarette smoke.

On the other hand, the APA Nationals, which I was at 2 weeks ago and will be again in August, is something I look forward to now that we have Diamond bar boxes. A good amount of vendors along with minis going on all day, make it a fun place to be.

I know alot of people don't care for APA, but the reality is that no league is perfect and APA does a great job of hosting tournaments.

The Monorail is a requirement for me, I need good food and a better atmosphere casino wise. Uber is convenient but can be pretty expensive, however it's only a short ride over to Griff's!

Listening to Eva on the live streams they are looking at moving. Nationals have gotten to big so they are looking for a new site. I’ve been to apa nationals and they do do it well. The arena for the finals was cool and it’s huge. I’d love to goto Griffs but the wife is a long so I have to do some non pool things lol

I've heard about that and moving away from the Westgate would be ideal (for me at least).

I completely understand about the non-pool things, I would typically stay at the Mirage or MGM Grand just so my wife could hang out at the pool while I played pool. It's annoying that all the fun activities are at the other end of the Monorail.

And the mono rail is great!! But If you just want to leave for a few hours in between matches it’s not ideal.

My wife and I played in the Scotch Doubles. I was disappointed that all the matches were in one congested area with a shit load of tables sitting idle. More than half the room was not used. Having to navigate through congested aisle to get to the table with obstacles like moved chairs in the dark passage way lead to a bruise on my shin. Plus being pressed so tightly with others was not comfortable, especially when the person next to me starts coughing. 🤷‍♂️

I do like the bus line, but your a bit of a way off from that route. As far as food you are very limited where you are at.

If you are part of the tournament you should get a discount at the buffet. Or just say you are….. And the coffee at the Westgate sucks! I want Dunkin! Plus for APA there are no microwaves in the rooms APA gets you. Not sure if they have them in any rooms. I brought a small percolator with last time. Any other hotel I’ve ever been to has a coffee maker in the room. Not westgate.

Another pool tournament that needs a food truck.

Just pay to someone to drive to a wholesaler get food and then pay them to stand outside the tournament with the refreshments.

Its a good job. Everyone sells food on the street and subway in NYC legally and illegally.

My experience in ACS is the weekly leagues were fun, a mix of newer players and seasoned players. The state championship event... it seemed like a huge money grab. By the time you paid for hotels, even staying at a cheap one, you owed more in hotels than what 1st place was paying. Everything was expensive as hell at the venue, like $7 for a tall can of busch lite. I walked 3 blocks away to a microbrewery and bought their 12 oz cans for $4 each. MUCH better taste, higher percentage and nobody said anything about me drinking one at the event.

But the payouts... We figured it out at the time, I forget the figures. But an event, say 8 ball singles standard there would be 100 entries at $30 a pop. 1st place was only like $350, second less and third. I think third payed $110 or something. (then they did separate intermediate and advanced). So what happened to the other $2K? It was like that with all the events. I get that it took money to rent tables and the venue, but after paying $150 a night for a hotel at best for 3 nights, you really have to basically win every event to even break even.

Fun experience but IMO not worth going to at all after experiencing it once. The weekly leagues are great but they can keep the state event. I'd rather spend $800 on a cue or something than that. The payscale isn't worth the travel time and not being able to sleep in my own bed for nights in a row. Now if I lived in Davenport then I'd go every year and sleep in my own bed and drive across town feeling fresh.

Our participation in BCAPL events has always been a vacation. With a win paying a good portion of the trip. It's Recreation and should be enjoyed. We met and interacted with some nice couples. They dispatched us handily and we got more time to enjoy other facets of the casino.

I would just be the guy that would hike down to the convenience store on the corner in front of the Westgate every morning and grab coffees for the team. FAR cheaper than the hotel coffee, and it wasn't a real long walk.

Bluenosers.... took me back. I remember taking The Bluenose Ferry from Maine to Nova Scotia, many years ago.
Congrats
Two of the women's teams placed 1st in the Open 9 ball and Open 8 ball. The men's out of Dooley's Sport Bar finished 3rd and all the other players had decent finishes. Cue sports in Nova Scotia has a fair following with decent turnouts for the tournaments held here.
