"Added Monies"

Is it wrong to hold any promoter up to the same high standards I have set for myself?

What's wrong is suggesting someone not adopting your definitions is adhering to some kind of LOWER standard.

You just don't get to define "added money" for all of us. And you didn't raise this in the abstract; you raised it regarding a particular tournament someone is trying to promote..

I knew I'd get keehauled for raising this issue.

Appropriately so, imo.

I don't see what the problem is. As long as the player knows what it will cost him, and what is being added to the entry fees, there is no problem. As long as the TD's fees don't come out of the entry fees, and the auctioneer's fees come out of the player auction. If the auctioneer's fees come out of the pot, then the players need to be told that a percentage of Calcutta goes to the auctioneer.

I do think $30 green fee is too high, $20 would be more like it for that tournament. Here in the midwest, almost all tournaments are on bar tables, so we have to pump quarters into the tables.

Everyone pretty well knows that a room owner breaks even on a tournament, and any money he makes is off the bar and food during the tournament from the players and railbirds. Most tournaments here, the room owner puts up the added money, or the majority of it. I wish Evelyn Dysert, who is an AZB member and runs the Midwest 9 ball tour, would comment on this. She does an excellent job.

The only thing I can see that would be a question is the $30 green
fee. If the promoter is taking anything, then it should be refered to
as a registration fee. ie: $100 entry fee (includes a $20 green fee and
$10 reg. fee) A player should always know what their entry fee is
going to.

Added money is just that. If you advertise $25,000 added with no
stipulations then if four players show up, you best add the $25,000

If it is $25,000 added based on 256 players, then pro-rate it.

I always hated the "added money based on a full field" technique
with no explanation of what a full field might be. 64, 128, 256 ???

Regardless of how it is is sold, it is at least honest and up front. This is exactly the kind of patronage Pool needs to get bigger. If the Promoter does it right he can get local news there to publicize it and get people talking about Pool.

While I can understand people do things differently, I hope this doesn't get too ugly. The last thing Pool needs is more infighting, or a purse that doesnt show. We cant afford it.

Added money comments

I have read the many inputs on this and IT IS NO WONDER THAT TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS/ROOM OWNERS ARE BACKING AWAY FROM HOLDING TOUNAMENTS. The constant Bi*&^%* about how the money is "added" , green fees etc ....FWIW I think anyone whith complaints should go out and TRY to put together a tournament with all that it takes! Grady, I have a ton of respect for you and what you have done in pool, but I have to tell you I think you go out of your way to "stir the pot" when someone else is running a tournament. You are smart enough to know that a majority of the players don't have a clue what it COSTS to hold a tournament yet (with a litttle goading) they will voice they feel they are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to money paid back. NOTHING IS FREE I would like someone to consider....without the tournaments what would you be doing? If you don't like the format STAY THE HELL HOME but lastly,,,,,how about instead of complaining do something to add positively to the event.
