hello all

this coming saturday I'm headed to Columbia, MO for our ACUI regional event. Our region includes KS, MO, NE & OK. It's a 9-ball event with the top 2 (or possibly 3) going on to nationals in the summer. This is a college student tournament, so it brings out some of the best college student shooters in the region...or atleast those that know about it :P

i played in the regionals last year and got 5th  out of like 20 something or another people.

my question is what kind of advice can you guys give me to prepare for this event this coming weekend? what types of practice or practice drills should I focus on? what can I do to help mentally prepare for this? any other advice? i'm determined to make it to nationals this year since I was so close last year.

thanks all!

Something simple that helps me alot is to look at the shot standing make up your mind about position chalk cue and when you set chalk on rail don't think about anything except making the ball period. Concentrate fully about making the ball when you set the chalk down, remember if you make the ball you shoot again or win. Try this and good luck, Leonard

Get into a solid repeatable preshot routine and stroke. Look at the table before you get down to shoot. Don't take the shot for granted, position on the next ball means nothing if you fail to pocket the ball you are shooting. There's no such thing as an easy shot.

Pocket more 9 balls than everyone else, and you should come out on top.

Good luck, let us know how you do.

Someone told me to rest the day before a big tournament like this and I like that idea. (Maybe play a few games for fun or whatever.)

Also what kills me when going to a multi-day tournament some distance away is travel time.

Get up at 5 or 6 am and maybe two hours to get there at 8 or 9 am, then maybe play last match at 10 or 11 pm, then 2 hours to get back home.

Maybe get home at 1am.

Then need to get up early to go back next day! This does not work. I don't want to go back, I want to sleep!

The locals have a big advantage because they don't have the travel time. So I think getting a hotel room (or finding somewhere to stay) the night before the tournament is a big plus. Then the day of the tournament you are just as well rested as the locals. (Don't need to be getting up at 5 or 6 am.)

Also if you have a long wait between matches (like 6 hours), you can go to your hotel and watch TV, rest, etc. It's very boring to sit around a pool hall for 6 hours waiting for your next match.

Then eating a big meal before playing can wreck my game. Someone told me to lightly snack throughout the day if playing frequently and this works good. If you know you will not be playing for several hours, eat a big meal then.

Those herbal energy pills help keep me going after being there all day. Caffeine is not good. Water is excellent! Those who start out drinking beer in the morning don't seem to stay in the tournament very long...

do a line of coke, smoke a joint, get high off of pain killers... etc amphetamines work too. Seems to work for most of the top tournament players... :O
