Advice please...4 butt case owners...how much case do you REALLY use?

Here's my situation: I currently carry 3 cues, a player, a breaker and the spare that I let other people use. I don't have a jump cue, but I'm probably going to buy either a jumper or a break/jump somewhere down the line. I don't have extra shafts for any of my cues, so the number of shafts in a case is really not a major concern. And, weight really isn't an issue for me, because I don't carry my case far.

I'm going to buy a new case, and I'm thinking that a 3 butt case with a pocket for a jumper butt (just in case) will get me by. But, I don't want to buy a case and then realize that I really needed that extra space for a 4th butt.

Those of you with 4 butt cases, how much do you use that 4th spot? Do you find it useful every day, or is it just for storage purposes?

I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Im thinking you shouldnt be playing anyone who doesnt own their own cue if you wanna get better.
I say forget the 3 by and get a 2 by.
 
Thanks for the input. I've tried the 2x and I found that the 3x was more helpful for my needs. Like I said, I rarely carry my case any real distance, so I don't really find it to be a hassle.

I carry the spare because I play on a couple of league teams where my teammates are sometimes running late because of work or whatnot and they didn't have time to run home and get their cues. So, the spare is actually used mostly by players of roughly my same skill level. They're my teammates, so I'd rather they play with a decent cue than one of those bar cues with a slip on tip. The lower level players don't generally know the difference so they don't even bother to ask.

Now in a tournament on the other hand, you're on your own finding a cue. Although, mine are always for sale for the right price :D
 
Cases

I don't have now, but have owned a Porper 4 x 8 in the past. Boy, it was heavy completely loaded.

I own a 3 x 5 case now, and feel it is just the right size. My case also has a jump butt pocket with its own zipper, but I carry a Break/jump cue so no need for it yet. (although I do want to buy an X-Jumper).

If you carry a playing cue with 2 (or 3) shafts, there is no need for a 2nd playing cue.

Did you switch because of the weight? or because you didn't need the extra space?

The second player isn't for me. I'd only use it in an absolute emergency. I carry it because frankly, if anyone's going to put a ding in the shaft or chip the butt plate on my player or my breaker. It's going to be me. And, I like to be able to help out a teammate or a buddy who doesn't have their cue with them.

So, I guess I can simplify that whole discussion by saying, I've made up my mind that I'm going to carry the three cues. I just need to know if anyone has found the 4th butt necessary or helpful.

Again, thanks. Any discussion is good discussion as far as I'm concerned.
 
I have rarely owned more than 2 cues at the same time. I just sold them both to pay for my new cue my first real custom, so I'm back down to one. There was a time I had four cues and only a 3x6 but I never thought about upgrading because I never used anything but my breaker and player and the 3rd(my g/f's) sat in the case without seeing light of day ever unless she was using it which was rare. unless you have a wife or g/f that uses a player and a breaker and you have to lug them all around for the both of you I'd stick with the 3X6 or if you don't use extra shafts with any of your cues have a 3x3 or 3x4 made for yourself custom.
 
3x5 is kind of nice if you have an 'extra' that you are trying to sell and/or for the special one that comes along at the 'perfect' price from time to time.

The only guys I have even known to carry a 4 butt case regularly were either trying to sell at least one of the cues or kept an empty slot to take in cues for repair. If you don't fix or flip cues, I can't see any reason to use a case that big.

Having never had a jump cue before, does anyone here have a bias one way or another on the jump butt pouch, vs keeping the jump butt in one of the regular tubes? I have a jump butt pouch in my current case, and it seems a little unprotected to me.

I own both a 3x5 and a 4x8..the 4x8 holds my main cues that I play with. Not much different in size really the 4x8 is a little more round,little heavier but I could get by with either.
