Any tips on giving lessons to my girlfriend , she is 28 and has been playing 1 year . only plays 8 ball . i consider myself a , b+ , player
but dont think its wise to be the one teaching her when i met her ( 6 mos) ago she had a good eye for shots , but had a few fundamental problems
that i got her to fix and she now has great form and a really great eye for aim points and a somewhat fair handle on the tangent line and cueball speed
she very rarely runs out but seldom needs more than 2 trips to the table

her break is very weak she is 5'3 ( im a cuemaker and can supply her with any equipment to help )

there is a local female ex-pro ( 80-90'S) that im going to try and have work with her as i think it would be good for her to see that a woman can play jam up pool every time she plays people say, " she plays great for a girl " trust me this fires her up lol.

any input on thing i should work with her first to get the most out of her time

thanks and good luck your day is comming ...kevin

Hi Kevin,

First off, you have to remember that you are her boyfriend, therefore she might not listen to you the same as she would listen to anyone else. So maybe lessons with anyone else...it doesn't have to be a woman.

Second, does she learn by watching better players play? Sometimes if people watch better players they pick up on their habits and pattern play.

Something that you could teach her would be pattern play. You said that she understands everything pretty well. Maybe showing her some basic patterns or how to pick out the best shot first.

Is she clear on the different english and how it affects the tangent line?

As for the break, maybe have her try the second ball break playing 8ball. That seems to work better because you don't have to break hard. Something to tell her about the break would be that it isn't about your body movement. Alot of people, women especially, try to put their whole body into it and nothing happens. It is all about timing. It takes time to work things up and get accurate aiming. Another thing might be a heavier break cue and a phenolic tip. That seems to work for some people that have weak breaks.

Let me know how things go. I wish you luck.

Take care,
Sarah

LMAO

VAP

VApool... i aint teaching her to drive a standard shift for damn sure

thanks sarah
actually pattern play and table managment in my opinion is her best asset
i feel it is mine as well and i very seldom cringe at her shot selection

actually i know nothing about breaking in 8-ball im 6'2 225#
ive never had any problem with it i always seem to pocket balls and park the cue i just think center ball , hit the 1 full ,and think speed not hard
and it happens naturally for me

thanks for the advise sarah if you ever play in a event in N.E. Ohio we will be there to cheer you on

I will agree 100% with Sarah and VAP on the girlfriend not listening to you. Its easier if you have someone at the pool hall you frequent give her lessions, like a house pro, or the owner if he is a better player than you.

And body size has nothing to do with a power break, Look at any of the Males / Females who are smaller yet have a massive break IE: Sarah, or Alex P, Johnny Archer, Bustemante, Jeanette Lee.

As Sarah mentioned, getting a break cue with the Phenolic Ferrule/Tip will help. You could buy a Action J/B and put the Ferrule/Tip on it and for about 120$ or so you have the same thing as a Sledgehammer.

And for Breaking in 8ball, using the second ball break works pretty good, or just using a semi-soft break on the 1ball, seems to work better.

So Kevin, how are things going? Are you guys making any progress? Have you tried the second ball break? I was just curious as to what is going on.

Good luck,
Sarah
