Aftermarket shaft for McDermott cue

I just purchased a brand new yet old stock McDermott HD-8 cue and would like to order a Ob or Intimidator shaft for it. The shaft just has a plain black collar. My local dealer said I would need to send the butt back to McDermott to have the new shaft matched up properly. How close will most aftermarket shafts match up without having to send the cue back to the factory? I measured as close to the end of the butt joint and came up with .868 inches. Thanks.

You could send it back to McDermott for sizing.

Or you can find a shaft online on eBay or similar. Most of the larger sellers on eBay will be glad to measure the joint diameter for you.
Tell them what size you have, and they will get as close as they can, maybe even a perfect fit. All you have to do is ask.

My McDermott measures .848" at the edge of the facing. I bought a McDermott standard maple shaft for it from an online billiard supply outlet (can't remember which one) and the shaft on its facing measures .853". The difference is so negligible that I don't even notice it. It is but a simple playing cue, not a collectible.

There's plenty of aftermarket shafts available. Just be sure you get the right pin size/threads and your butt diameter measurements were accurate.

Mcdermott collar sizing

If the McDermott has a black phenolic joint then the sizing can vary alot. That is because when the butt joint and shaft collar are made they are turned down from a single piece and then made into the two halves. This produces collars and shafts that are not necessarily interchangable. I have had 2 or more models of the same cue where the shafts would not matchup interchangably.

The stainless stell joint diameters are predictable of course.

I would buy the shaft and then have it turned doen by McDermott or a local cue maker if you aren't happy. That and have whoever is selling the shaft measure it for you. Too small a shaft with a stainless joint leaves you no way to make them matchup.

I am an OB 1 dealer and I can order you a shaft at the exact diameter you ask for with a plain black collar, pm me for details.--Leonard
