Age old question

So drawing from the thread on the number one mistake amateurs make "or something like that" I came up with this after tonight.

First let me say this. Just got back from practicing and BOY was it good, stroke felt good, the click when you hit the ball good was there also. Speed control was a tad off here and there but that goes with skill level and experience so I'm not beating myself up. Which brings up the question.

"What did I do tonight what was different and how do I duplicate it" this I think is the burning question in pool players head, maybe less the pros but they are not exempt either.

So my original question. How'd you hit them tonight or last night, how have you been hitting'em? Weather it's play or practice.

Get in the habit of videotaping yourself, creating a continually growing folder of video files of your practice sessions, and routinely analyzing these files.

There's no excuse for not doing so with the current availability of relatively inexpensive camcorders and smartphones, and small but adequate cheap tripods for any of these devices. The camera is a useful objective observer and will be aware of things you couldn't notice while you're running balls or doing drills.

Put as much eyeball & mind work into analyzing visually-evident nuances of your fundamentals and shortcomings (and strengths) as you exert in the act of playing itself, if you're sincerely seeking improvement from session to session and over time.

You can try QMD (www.cue-md.com). It'll automatically record and save the shots of your training sessions. You can go back and compare your current recordings with new ones to pinpoint any changes. You'll catch subtle things you may not see from a video and it also gives you instant feedback about the straightness of your stroke.
