I'm considering purchasing an air compressor unit to add to my shop. What psi, gallon or size is recommended? What do most of you have in your shop? I'm looking for something that can easily be moved and wont be used too often. Primarily for spraying the finish.
Suggestions??

Thanks,
Zim

If you are not familiar with the different types, check out www.sawdustmaking.com/AirCompressors/aircompressor.htm, some good info. I would stay away from the oilless type.

The bigger the better. I would consider a 30 gal. tank the minimum. Heat and water are your enemies here. I have a filter and water seperator on the main line and a second one for my spray rig. For general spraying and blowing things off CFM will not be a big issue. If you want to start using air tools then that is another matter.

This is my compressor

I'm primarily going to use it to blow things off my work area and to apply a finish to cues. I currently apply the finish while on the lathe by rubbing it on. I'm designing/building a spray booth that will hold up to 3 cues, will rotate and can use the sprayer to apply the finish.

Zim,

Please be sure to post some pics of your booth when it is finished :D .

I need to build one also...

Thanks,

I have an HVLP made by Croix. I would buy an Accuspray today though, I think it has a better gun then mine has. The HVLP is so easy to use I love it.

I was looking at the HVLP sprayers! I've heard good things about them. Looking at purchasing a gravity feed sprayer.

,,,have a lot of buddies in the auto painting business,,,they all agree that if you use a gravity feed gun you'll never go back to an HVLP.....no experience there myself, have to depend on my friends.

the boss (jack flanagan) has a 30 gal. v-twin compressor in the pool hall. probably the only pool hall around that can air up your tires , spray a finish on new counters , and probably repair anything from pool cues to cars (when he decides to work). LOL

has a combination regulator and filter from Harbor Freight that keeps the air lines dry and clean , but he needs a dust free environment to spray in.

I've got a 60 gallon on the way(currently in my Father's Garage). I know your situation may be a little different due to your occupation. I'd get the biggest that I thought I could handle when it came time to PCS. Sometimes I miss the USAF, but I always hated the moves.. Good Luck and don't forget to put something on it to seperate the water.

Gravity feed definately the way to go. I use a 30 gallon around the shop and a 20 gallon just for the Pantograph. I use a filter at every connection. Most filters come with a diagram to help you route the lines. I know you like pictures.

Thanks to all for the input! It looks like I'll look at the Gravity Feed sprayers and a good compressor. I have an autobody mechanic that I talk to almost daily and after showing him a few different custom cues, he suggested the gravity feed sprayer, Finesse It II by 3M along with a 10gal-20gal compressor.
