Air Force Members on AZ

How many AZ members are in the Air Force? Seems like quite a few from what I've read.

I've been in the Air Force since 18 Feb 1998. I'm an active duty SSgt. I'm currently stationed in D.C. I'm probably going to get out of the regular Air Force and go active Air Force Reserve (I like the Metro DC area) because I don't feel like moving anymore. Oh...and I'm a left handed player as well. I've been playing since....1985 (7 years old or so). Been playing (on and off) serious since about 1994. The most beloved pool room I've played in so far was Starcade Billiards in Ft. Walton Beach Florida. Here in DC I play mostly at Champion Billiards in Shirlington, VA.

Anyone else? I know Zim is a prior Air Force guy by a few months.

Matt

Obviously, I'm in the Air Force. TSgt, stationed at Altus AFB, OK. Been in 15.5 years and am a 4A0X1.

Jim

BTW...I'd be curious to know how many left handed Air Force (former and active) pool players we have...

Health Services Management eh? Great career field. 4.5 years and you can retire and play pool full time. ;D Or are you a 30 year man?

I was USAF for 4 years. I didn't like being in the service (used to walk blocks out of my way to avoid saluting an officer if I saw one coming), but in 1967, you either picked your service or wound up in the infantry, there was no option to choose to not participate. BTW, I was a Procurement Specialists, local procurement not weapons on anything like that.

... Oh...and I'm a left handed player as well.

Hmmmm, now I am a righty and didn't like being in the service, maybe we're on to something here. I always knew you lefties were super aggressive people, I know my lefty older brother used to pound the crap out of me anyway. :D

Does Air Force JROTC and ROTC count? JROTC in high school and ROTC in college. I have both my FAA A&P licenses. Never got around to getting my FCC rating.

Sure, why not. So were you one of the officer's that catscradle was trying to avoid? LOL

LOL, never went into the service. Just finished the ROTC stuff and went on to work for the government as a civilian instead. Everytime I had to salute, I couldn't stop myself from laughing and recalling the Benny Hill salute he did in his skits. Classic!

Retired after 24 years in the AF. Now work civil service for the AF, don't have to salute anymore! Left handed by the way.

Yep, Health Service Management, I manage the money and manpower for the hospital. I get to tell the Doc's they need to work harder, when they're not making enough money :D . I'm a retire when I get ready to man. I'll never make Chief, I'm not political enough. We'll see. I know I won't be playing pool full time. I was thinking more along the lines of "hello, welcome to Walmart, do you need a basket?" type of job.

So what do you do?

Jim

Half and half

Left hand ex Air Force (1959-1963). I only shoot pool and write lefty though. But since I never knew my right from my left I got out, the officers never appreciated left handed salute.
Since I am a little older than you I would like to suggest you consider staying in the Air Force. I wish I had stayed in now that I look back, as those last 13 years go pretty quick. Since you invested 7 why not? I have a good friend of mine who decided to stay in for 20, collected a retirement, went to work, for another 20, collected that retirement and how he is also collecting Social Security, 3 incomes gives him lots of time for golf.
Unlike Castlecradle I enjoyed the Air Force and would not trade that experience for anything. But I won my first car beating a guy out of a $1000 in the rec room at our barracks in Alaska, so that helped. lol

That might be. From what I've found, saluting origninated as a way to demonstrate you didn't have a weapon in your right hand.

Unlike Castlecradle I enjoyed the Air Force and would not trade that
experience for anything.

Maybe I was jaded from working at a base where I watched young men go out and body bags come back. I never observed flights of live returnees coming back through Travis. Me and a few friends used to eat at the base terminal instead of the chow hall because the food was better. Just seeing all those guys go out and wondering how many wouldn't come back or would come back f(&)(*d up ... well, it didn't make you feel good.

I work in Supply. I'm the NCOIC of Procedures and Accountability...but now it encompasses all of the Logistics Readiness Squadron instead of just Supply. I'm basically the guy who ensures Supply, Trans, Logplans, and TMO are doing their jobs correctly.

You do make a good point. I still have 1.5 years left so I could change my mind. (So, I'll have just over 9 when my enlistment is up). If I do go active ANG, I would still retire at the same time though...so there would be no difference. If I make TSgt next year I might consider staying Active duty because that will be making it kind of fast if I have it on at my 9 year mark. Our deputy is a Civilian. He is a retired 30 year Chief Master Sergeant, a GS-15 who's been in long enough to retire from Civil Service, and he gets Social Security. He's a great guy, but what I would call a WORKAHOLIC (he's 65 years old).

So you're a 2S? LRS has it rough on the deployments/convoys. I only know a few LRS guys, Chief Casey Warren and MSgt Hayden Pickett are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

My boss is a retired SMSgt (ret 1980) and is a GS-10 -- he's 70 years old. Don't feel bad.

Jim

Prior enlisted from 89-95.
Duty stations were Eaker AFB in Arkansas and Griffiss AFB in NY.
I can't for the life of me remember my job code but I was in missile maintenance working on the SRAM/ALCM. I believe it 2MX...

Left handed too!

Nice...so I'm guessing you were at least a MSgt..or LtCol if an officer?

Did anyone here know Andy Grubbs from Starcade Billiards in FL? He was a co-owner? Many didn't know it, but he was a retired Major from the Air Force (prior enlisted) Reserves and I believe worked Air Traffic Control at Eglin along with co-owning Starcade Billiards. Andy passed away not too long ago (RIP) but he was a great guy, and gave me lots of good advice. Hurlburt was my first duty station and I was all of 19 years old. His good mentorship kept me out of a lot of trouble. So, Andy is another prior Air Force pool player I have to mention out of respect.

I was lucky

Sorry I screwed up your name. Catscradle/
If you remember I told you I was at Travis too but it was before all that Viet Nam crap happened so I never saw all that, I can see where it might be discouraging.

I was in from '83-89. Stationed at Barksdale in Louisiana. Spent a few months at SAC HQ in Nebraska, Then 3 years at Yokota AB Japan.
