Alcano & Co. overpowers World Team
Calapan City -- Team Philippines walloped the World Team, 31-19, Tuesday
to win the Kabayan San Miguel Beer World 9-Ball Challenge at the Filipiniana
Hotel here.
The team made up of 2006 World Pool champion Ronato Alcano, Marlon
Manalo, Gandy Valle, Jeffrey de Luna and Antonio Gabica pocketed $20,000
in the dual meet that coincided with Oriental Mindoro's 57th founding
anniversary.
The World Team of Rodney Morris of the United States, Marcus Chamat of
Sweden and England's Karl Boyes, Darren Appleton and Scott Higgins
received $10,000.
Morris and company opened up with a 5-1 lead in the early session on
Monday before settling for a 19-17 advantage.
The Filipinos bounced back Tuesday when Valle and Manalo trounced
Chamat, 7-3, and Higgins, 8-2, respectively.
Alcano secured the title when he dominated Boyes, 9-1, in the last match.
"I made sure I had a good start," said Valle in Filipino.
"We all helped one another to win this for the country," added Manalo,
who is set to see action in the Thailand Southeast Asian Games next
month.
Meantime, the seeded Alcano spearheads the Filipinos' bid in Wednesday's
kickoff of the Negros Oriental International 9-Ball Championships at the
