They used to have a bumper pool table at my pool hall and people actually started to really like the game and gamble at it. Saw some weird stuff- jump shots,etc...

Anyone have any big $$ stories of bumper pool or stories of champions at the game?

No.

Whoppie and Marcus were the best Bumper Pool players of my generation. They both hung around Le Cue in Houston when I lived there in 1969. Whoppie is pool famous for this: When his opponent scratched on the nine ball and they were playing shoot out, the nine ball was on the spot and Whoppie had ball in hand behind the line. He rolled out.
Marcus played good One Pocket and 9 Ball, too. I haven't heard anything about either of these gentlemen in years.

They put a bumper pool table in at the old Orlando Billiards Center and we all fooled around with it and thought we could play. Some construction guys from out of town came in one night, and one of them said he was pretty good at bumper pool when he was a kid. Naturally, one of the local shortstops jumped all over this and matched up for $20 a game. About $400 later, the shortstop was crying in his beer, and the next day the table was buried in the back of the room. Titanic Thompson, one of the real legendary gamblers, used to say that no one was an easier mark than a gambler who is out of his element. A pretty good percentage of the money made in pool scores the past 50 years wound up at the casinos, racetrack or in the hands of poker hustlers (and bumper pool hustlers, it seems).

I bought an ancient Fischer bumper pool table,,,thought I'd introduce it to a new generation in my game room,,,it paid for itself in 2 months,,,old and young, alike, played it,,,then an 'expert' arrived on the scene and killed all the action,,,after that I was lucky if it brought in $10 a week,,,,,,,jflan

Forgive my ingorance, but we don't have bumper pool in the UK. The only thing remotely close would be Bar Billiards.

How do you play bumper pool?

About 15 years ago (or more maybe) I was in Rusty's in Arlington.

They used to have a bumper pool table up near the bar and Mickey Stone and I am pretty sure Steve Smith (Lizard) were gambling pretty high on that table.

I'm not sure how it turned out, but it was a riot to watch them play.

This is a good description of bumper pool and even has a diagram of the table.

It is a great game for kids and bangers, but it gets really weird when good players play it.

Bumper pool is a good example of "mind over matter"... When a person works at something enough, they can develop some amazing skills. I had a friend that had a table in his living room and we went head-to-head for a thousand games or more. We developed pinpoint banking off of those bumpers and amazing speed control and power shots (locking up your opponents ball while moving your ball to your hole or pocketing it).

It is a truly enjoyable game that can be played at a very high strategic level. Don't kid yourself.
