Ambidextrous Shooting

John Morra has switched to playing left handed now, but he still shoots some shots right handed including break shots and jump shots.

He might be the best ever to play with both hands, he plays pro level both right and lefty.

what john morra is doing is amazing.

surprised nobody's mentioned efren yet..seen him shoot plenty of shots offhand successfully and look quite natural doing it. have heard he runs racks that way, but haven't seen it myself..wouldn't doubt it at all tho

personally, when my arm starts feeling a bit sore from playing, I switch hands and play a few balls that way..kind of balances me out. other than that, I use a bridge or play behind the back.

What percentage of pool players regularly play both left and right handed?

Does anyone practice this? I was thinking I might pursue this, but I should probably learn to shoot properly right handed first!

By the way, I'm right handed, right dominant eye. Any tips for shooting left handed?

I'm a left handed shooter. When I was a young kid and learning pool from my dad, he would make me switch to play righty when needed. I got used to it, and do it pretty well today. I highly advise training your brain and body to switch up when needed. Dominant eye has nothing to do with it. I'm left handed and right eye dominant.

Myself like a lot of great left handed players (Dennis Hatch, Mike Sigel, Steve Mizerak, Rodney Morris and Steve Frost) all are naturally right-handed but because of a dominant left eye we shoot pool left handed.

I feel this is more of advantage than for most naturally left handed players who have to learn to shoot right-handed. With myself and the players mentioned above we're naturally right-handed and shoot pool left-handed. So when we do have to shoot with the opposite hand, which is our natural hand for just about everything but shooting pool, a rifle, etc. it's a much easier learning curve than say a naturally left handed player trying to learn right-handed or vica-versa.

It is a great asset to my game as it often resolves an issue that I may have to use a bridge. If you take a very tall player like Dennis Hatch who can shoot great left-handed and pretty good right-handed and with their height they NEVER shoot with a bridge.

How Many Times Do You See a Player Practice Using Just a Cue Bridge To Get Better?

Op handed & I know a lot of good players that will only revert to using the crutch when ineeded.
The height & reach of the player, plus the table size, matters for when a bridge has to be used.

Ambidextrous shooting is very common with the folks I know & we even play games that require
shooting alternate handed just for chuckles sake. When you know your opponent has to shoot
the next shot with his opposite hand, and you leave him long on the opposite short rail, the odds
turn in your favor. The bottom line is unless you practice opposite handed, just stick with the bridge.

The funny thing is after decades of pool playing, I have never seen anyone in any pool room practice
using a bridge and so is there any wonder when you resort to relying upon an infrequently used stroke
that it lets you down. I hate bridges and so I avoid them and the only way to do that is never lose table
position or else develop your opposite handed pool skills. I use opposite hand versus a bridge most shots.

I'm left handed and left eye dominant. If I have to shoot off handed I just close my thumb and forefinger and allow a pretty loose grip. It seems to help me to shoot straighter when shooting as a righty. I also align my dominant eye over the cue. I don't even consider shooting off handed if I need to move the cue ball more than 18".

I recently began developing my left. I was surprised at how accurately I shoot left handed. The stroke mechanics were definitely not there at first, and getting into a stance was a little bit excruciating. Once I started being able to do the stance to where it feels natural I worked on my stroke with Tor Lowry's stroke drill for a couple of hundred balls. Last few weeks whenever I do drills I now complete them left and right handed back to back, I get about the same result with each hand, though I always seem to put a little more power on every stroke with the left hand (occasionally causing shape issues).

I have been really having fun with developing my left, have been playing every player at the pool hall that I think is weaker than me left handed to make the games a little more even. Winning against most of my league teammates left handed is neat, since three of them are left handed it makes it a little more interesting.

Was planning to shoot the entire league session that starts in two weeks left handed, will just have to see if I can stick to it.

all of you should be ashamed

It's bad enough that the Naugha has been hunted and killed almost to
extinction for their hydes and the Mince slaughtered for their meat to
make pies, and now you people are talking about shooting Ambidextrous's.
Then you try to justify it by saying you use either hand. What do you do
with it after you shoot it, display on the wall in your man cave for all of your
macho friends to see. I'm going to get in touch with U. S. Representative
Alexandria Cortez ,and make her aware of this. She is smart enough to
know how to put a stop to it.
