Amboyna wood for my cue

I am currrently having a cue made by Joe Callaluca. Super nice and talented guy in New Hampshire. I know these pictures are relatively basic. The cue still will be turned down a few more times. But I thought that maybe I could update in steps through production. I think this wood is absolutely gorgeous.

It will be a solid amboyna forearm and butt sleeve. (I wanted the wood to do all the talking) Bushka rings in all five positions. Ivory joint with radial pin. Ivory substitute for the butt cap and a rust colored piece of textured leather (JW Petree keeps awsome leather).

Cue will be done in about 2 months. Maybe I can update every couple of weeks.

Jimmy.. as a huge amboyna lover myself.. i think that cue will be amazing when done... :)

click on the first paul mottey link in my signature and you will see a pic of my amboyna cue... and everytime i see another cue made out of it.. i just start drooling.. like the dog and the dinner bell story..lol..

I cannot wait to see this one when it is finished.
One of my next cues will have an amboyna burl forearm with ebony points and an ebony butt. This will be done by Jim White and I am waiting for the word he is ready to start.

Looks nice.............I have a cue coming that has amboyna used as the pointwood. However the amboyna that Is being used in my cue isnt as dark as that amboyna.

Very nice Scruggsy propeller cue.

I picked up this piece of Amboyna at the Valley Forge show. You never know how a piece of wood will turn out from a rough block. It has tons of figure and I wanted it to be on the darker side. Everything looks good so far.

I have just rec'd my Amboyna wood for my next cues. The wood seems VERY light, is this the reason you have to core Amboyna wood?
I plan on Amboyna for the handle and the forearm.
This is the first time that I will be working with Amboyna, been building cues for 4 years now.

i believe that amboyna should be cored because burls arent very strong woods and if u just use one solid piece it might end up warping.

Yeah, burls don't grow like normal woods. They have no grain stucture like you see in most commonly used woods for pool cues.

Amboyna is definitely not the easiest stuff to work with. Very porous and unstable. Before finish is applied, most guys put some sort of sealer (maybe epoxy) to help insure the finish. I definitley no expert. Before you work with it , I would talk to someone that is more experienced.
