Americans - are you happy with what Matchroom is doing with Pool ?

Matchroom has really vamped up the events which is great for the players and great for fans

BUT i know not everyone is a fan of Matchroom.

As an Aussie with uk roots, it means i get to see these pool events on Foxtel in HD with proper production values and commentary. I remember trying to watch streams of the 9 ball worlds in quatar a few years ago, they were horrendous and nothing is worse than a stream with no commentary (though yes it's better than nothing).

Matchroom has it's favourites in terms of players, thankfully that includes a lot of my favourite players like Darren Appleton, Chris Melling, SVB, Joshua Filler and Jayson Shaw.

Once your in with Matchroom and you get a bit of a fan following, you would need to play really badly over several events to get booted.

Also means it is more of a closed shop for newer players to get in on the action based on talent and not TV appeal.

How many Matchroom events have pure open qualifiers and aren't mostly invitational based ?

so what do American think of Matchroom ? Are you getting their events broadcast on proper TV ? or only via streams ?

Are there many American players missing out ?

I like that you could watch both tables on matchroom.live for just 99 cents a day. I wish I'd known that before Day 3. DAZN's more expensive, but you can watch whatever they've archived for 30 days.

Best thing to happen to pool possibly ever, I only watched the finals and it was on DAZN, great stream, commentary and no issues

I agree with this. I have never really followed pro pool religiously so it's hard to have a solid opinion but from my point of view - Matchroom is the only promotor stepping up and trying to make this a "professional" sport.

Production value matters and Matchroom is far and away the best at this.

Will I watch a good match that looks like it was filmed in a Russian interrogation basement? Sure. But it's a hell of a lot better when the visuals and sounds seem like something that should be on a real TV channel.

50/50 for me.

I do not like that they decided to quit the template rack in the later rounds of the world championship. everything should be universal across the board until the end. I think that's BS.

I like winner break, but if we are going to do that make it with a break box.

Production is amazing do not get me wrong, but imo accustats still does tournaments better. But it is still too early to say anything.

I somewhat agree about the template rack but it was stated before hand how they were going to do it and everyone knew when they signed up. If you watched Emily's interview she did with Karl she explained it quite well.

It’s not on TV in the US, but streaming > “TV” today anyway. Cable TV has been dropping like a rock for 10+ years and with all the streaming services that have been growing so much recently, DAZN streaming is like Disney+ and Netflix etc rather than dark basement pool streams.

I don’t think there are many American players missing out, I just think there aren’t enough good American pro pool players. 🤷‍♂️

Matchroom expanding beyond the Mosconi Cup, World Cup of Pool, and World Pool Masters was huge for the sport.

I also like that they have added the UK Open, the European Open, and the Premier League Pool events. Between Matchroom's entire slate, Derby City, Predator events, U.S. International Open, and U.S. Open 8 ball/10 ball, there are great pool events happening all the time now.

Hopefully if Matchroom can keep growing the sport, we can start seeing bigger prizes. A $100k prize for the World 9 Ball championship would be a huge step in the right direction.

Matchroom is the best thing that has happened to pro pool in decades. No, they are not perfect, but they continue to improve their pro pool offering. Emily Frazer, the tireless and ambitious CEO of Matchroom Pool, is god's gift to pool. I always used to say that only Mike Zuglan's Joss Tour events could be counted on to run on schedule, but now we can add Matchroom events to that.

I definitely appreciate the fact that Matchrooms breathing life back into a sport, that was seeing a decline in popularity .
100% right. Let’s see how that lasts. Hopefully they are getting their numbers right so it makes it sustainable. MR is not in the biz of losing $ forever.

If they are getting good returns then this will last or get better. MR wins-we all win, players & rail birds.

If after a season or 2 if MR isn’t getting their expected ROI then it’s all over-everyone loses.

MR is smart and there’s a better chance with them at the wheel than anyone else. They made many internal changes this past couple years. Like their whole staff, so they intend on winning and cut out all the potential problems from the past—a new broom sweeps clean. (Having said that I really liked some of the MR people I knew). I just know a handful of the new people.

Time will tell

But that damned purple 5 MUST BE CORRECTED ASAP

Best

Hey man I get it, does not mean it makes sense. At least to me it does not. It's like telling two pro tennis players that the first half will be played on a clay court but the second half will be moved to grass.

But again, it's still early for them as a producer of this many pool events within the calendar year. The best thing they have going for them is the money behind the name so it will keep enticing these players to keep coming out for said events as long as it is there right?

I know that are a lot of people I don't like it, but I sure do like the shark gray cloth. At least from a video standpoint. Haven't had a chance to play on it yet.
I played on a gray table in Florida in the late 80’s for a bit over a week. 40 hours I’d guess.

Not sure why I remember it, but I do. I do t recall playing on one again. I hit a couple balls at Bonus Ball but that doesn’t count.

I’m a firm believer in green cloth.

If I had to pick a 2 choice I’d take gray over tourney blue 8 days a week. That blue isn’t comfortable for me.

For non green tables gray or tan(distant 3rd) are my 2nd & 3rd choices. If I never saw a blue table again, I’m ok with that. Red is the worst possible color.

It's been said before and I'll say it again so people quit complaining.

They plan on having enough referees to hand rack every match, they just don't have enough now.

Why when things are explained to people do they keep on complaining?

I agree. I have tournament green on my home table. I don't recall a recent match where any pro has played on tournament green. But I do prefer it.

I chose green for one because I like it. + 2, all the local tables I play on for League have green cloth.
