Amsterdam Billiards (NYC)

i play at masters, queens blvd & 39th i believe, right under the 59th st. bridge...every wednessday they have an in house tournament $15 entry depending on who plays, double elimination & race to 5..good practice...

Queens? Forget it. I guess I'll have to skip playing pool when I'm in NYC (Manhattan!) this November.

It's not that far. If you're already on the train to get to a poolroom in Manhattan, just stay on for another 15 minutes and take the 7 train to 40th Street.

That's the 7-train. lololololololol. The bridge is a couple miles away.

Depends on who you ask.

i dont know about the trains, but i drive there all the time, Masters is only about a mile tops from the bridge, if that at all !!

Soho's pretty gross but they're trying to clean it up.

There's also Broadway but it smells funny in there.

Not really much choices in downtown NY for pool. That's at least until ABC opens up.

I've heard only good things about Masters and that Weds. tourney draws a lot of good players.

People are known to leave Manhattan and take the No. 7 to Shea or the U.S. Open ... which is about 10 stops beyond Masters. John Rocker, if anybody remembers who he was, was impressed by the ride, for sure.

But after ABC closes uptown and before they reopen downtown, Manhattan will be hurtin' for class pool venues. You can always go get robbed at B'way Billiards ... tables too close together, but they're reasonably well-taken care of (a handful have just been reclothed) and it never closes. And you can hardly beat a $4 Stella or $4 an hour these days in NYC.

I though Slate Plus down town was very nice, think it was around 14th st. or something...east side...not too sure..

Slate is where the old Chelsea Billiards use to be - in the 20's. It's 'nice' but it's more like a bar/nightclub with pool tables than a nice pool room. (Black table clothes on some of the tables, kind of expensive, loud, etc.)

Broadway is inexpensive but that smell...phew.

There will be no gap between Amsterdam's original location and their new one. In fact, there will likely be overlap. This I was assured.

Also, I am fully confident Amsterdam will return uptown. Maybe not as north as they are now but definitely 40s-60s.

Jude,

So there's no truth in Amsterdam buying the space that Corner's used to occupied?

No, that's a done-deal. Amsterdam Billiards is now leasing the former Corner Billiards space. There is going to be a multi-million dollar renovation but in the end, the table-layout will be somewhat similar and the bar will remain the same. However, from what I know, there will be a short time when both clubs will be open. Unlike what was suggested before, there will be no gap between Amsterdam's Upperwestside location closing and their downtown location opening.

So Amsterdam is still open? When do they close, and when will the new one open?

Amsterdam Billiards (Amsterdam Avenue & 76th Street) is open and will remain open until January (I believe). The new location will open some time around then but BEFORE the original location closes. No dates have been announced and I'm sure there are factors that are out of Amsterdam's control. It will happen when it will happen which should be January (because they're tearing down the building soon after) and will happen with as smooth a transition as possible (because that's what the owners are trying to accomplish).

Actually I can handle the gnats. It's Spanish Eddie I can't handle.
