O.k. so I am going to Manhattan this weekend, and I am contemplating making a trip to Amsterdamn billiards on Saturday afternoon. However, the Amsterdamn website is terrible and I don't know their pricing structure, so I figured I would post here to see if anyone can give me tips on how playing there won't be so rough on my wallet. Last time I went, a few years ago, I think I spent over $20.00 in a very short amount of time. Do they have any specials like, "play in the afternoon for a flat price" --this one is common in Boston. Is it cheaper to play with someone i.e. they charge for the table by the hour, not the person by the hour, and if that is the case is there anyone here who wants to knock'em around this weekend?

The ABC has something called the "Power Play", which is just that; pay one flat price ($22?) to play for the afternoon. It's a good deal. Jude (from this board) is the guy to talk to about Amsterdam.

Yikes, I thought this place was one of the better maintained rooms. Oh well, another one bites the dust.

the room is fine but the food sucks and is very overpriced. I highly rec you plan to eat eslewhere. Right up the street is Planet Sushi very good, and there are tons of other options in the hood.

oh if you want to try anohter pool hall, there is Corner Billiards on 4th street just blockes from Union Square. But I think it is not all that cheap and they do not have power plays....

That is a terrible deal! The largest/nicest (and I'm using the term "nicest" very loosely) room in AZ charges $6 from the time they open til 7pm. There are ther nice places that are free until 7pm.

It's the real estate that drives the prices.

Eric, got any rpices on what a square foot goes for in the upper west side?

Dude, this is NY. Things are more expensive, it's all relative. For that matter, don't look at the real estate prices here, you'll be going to see "Elizabeth", after the "big one" :p

It's a decent room, you won't be disappointed.

My brother bought a 1 bedroom condo, 697 sq. ft. in Union Square (a few blocks from Corner Billiards). Nice building, good location for....

$655,000.23

OK, I made up the .23 part. :D

It would sell for about $800k, today (2 1/2 years later). Not the Upper West, but you get the idea...

I understand the real estate side of it but it is still a game of pool.

If Shaq turned his mansion into a pool hall, would you pay $500 for the day rate just because the rent cost more there? Gotta draw the line somewhere for the value of a pool game.

I know $20 is not that bad but as far as good deals go, I think they must be one of the most expensive in the country. That makes it a bad deal since deals are compared to equal products offered elsewhere...

For that 22.00 you get about 6 hours of pool, that is less than 4.00 an hour and if you play with someone else then even less. I think it is a great deal considering that prime time rates at ABC can be 14.00 an hour on the weekends and they will have a waiting list.
It is all relative and when you live in NY you know your money is not going far...
I think since moving South I have probablly paid less than a couple of hundred dollars on pool time in 3 years, if that. It is just a very different world. In NY you not only pay more for pool but for a beer, a Starbucks Coffee or a Big Mac. All buisness owners must factor in all their overhead to set their prices...

Cuechick, so I can split the $22 with someone who is playing with me? If so, I am definately interested in finding someone to practice with...alright any AZer think he/she can handle the infamous kollegedave?

What day are you going to ABC? You should call and check the league/tourney schedule. You will be very disappointed if you get there and all the good tables are taken because of league or tourney. The last 3 or 4 Saturdays I went, there was either a straight pool league, or a tourney. Pricing is typical NY prices -> nothing's cheap, and if it is, you better ask why. There will be MANY more players at ABC than Corner. (FYI: I think Corner is $9 per hour during the day on Sat.). If you really want to practice, try table 11 at Corner. doh!

What are you coming to Manhattan for? Practice or matching up? And if you are interested in other rooms (Queens etc), PM or post and you'll get lots of info.

An even better deal would be playing for free. If you'd like to shoot some with me (for fun, not for money) on Saturday afternoon, I'll pay the table time.

Send me a PM if you're interested.

Barb, why should I take pictures of everything and everyone? In any case, I don't have a camera.
