They can now do brain imaging and can see different parts of the brain being active depending on what a person is focusing their mind on. Scientists know which part of the brain is used for various activities. It would be interesting to test pool players of varying abilities to see which part of the brain "lights up" when they are focusing on pool. I don't think the technology exists to actually test while they are playing pool, but perhaps they could be placed in the machine and shown videos of pool.
I wonder which parts of the brain are used in pool. I suspect the part that is used for math is used heavily in pool but I wouldn't be surprised if the artistic part is also used. I also suspect that there is a difference between the brain activity of a pro and a ball banger while playing pool.
There was a rather painful documentary years ago about a music conductor named Clive Wearing whose brain was attacked by a virus and he was left with a 7 second memory. The only person he recognized was his wife, and yet he could still play music. He couldn't remember it 7 seconds later, but the part of his brain which allowed him to play music was still intact. We experienced something similar with my Dad who had alzheimer's disease. He no long knew who I was, I don't think he knew his own name, but one Sunday my Mother took him to church they sang an old hymn named "Stand up for Jesus" and he knew the words and started singing along.
I'm just rambling I guess, but that is an experiment I'd like to see.
